The rule is the rule but they enforced something that is similar to what the rule actually states.
VP of officiating Dean Blandino explained the rule that has been on the books since the offseason.
"When you look at the play, you can see New England No. 94 pushing New England No. 74 into the (offensive) formation," he said, via NFL.com. "That's a violation of the rule, it was put in for player safety, and it is the correct call."
Patriots coach Bill Belichick, predictably dour, disagreed with the call.
"We weren't on the second level when we pushed him, no," Belichick said after the game. "You can't push from the second level. I didn't think we did that."
So I heard the rule read straight from the rulebook earlier and it is worded that it has to take place on the second level so I think it was close but what a dumb rule. Some of these rules are just stupid. 99 % of people disagree with me on horsecollars too but those fuckers should be legal too. If the only way you can tackle a guy is to horsecollar him then it should be allowed. Again yes people will get hurt and break all kinds of shit but you can always choose another sport.
