The continuing resolution budget that the Senate passed was a Republican-backed sequester budget. The GOP just keeps moving the goal posts further and further to the right as the Tea Party gains more influence.

Maybe I'm a dickhead but I love reading the news about the food stamp panic/shut down. I'm not saying it's terrible for some people to get them but it just seems like way to many people rely on it and I've heard stories where people totally just phone in job interviews because they'd rather sit on govt cheese, money and section 8 housing. I just read "Detroit: An American Autopsy" by Charlie Leduff last week. What do think of this guy? He seems a bit self serving, but it was good read. I have only been to Detroit once and I couldn't believe it was in America -- and I have seen the bad parts of Chicago many times.

The 'let it happen' thing is a one way option. Religious authoritarians would like nothing more than to declare the system corrupt, declare martial law and you have a right wing dictator until the 'purge' is complete. As for Leduff, he's kind of a nutter. Acerbic and cynical. Calls himself a reporter but has a tendency to make himself the news instead of letting the news happen. During the Mayoral primary this year there was a guy with a similar name to the lead candidate for Detroit Mayor and Leduff encouraged this guy 'out of the blue' to run for mayor, just to F with the system. My thought is that he was doing it on behalf of the challengers camp (Benny Napoleon). I heard he has a book, but i'd never read anything he would have to say.

I haven't followed this situation very closely, but my basic understanding is that the Democrats refused to accept funding to run the government. If that's the case, then they obviously are mostly to blame for this mess. Even if they feel that the Republican house is being unreasonable, it was ultimately the Dems' decision to let this happen.

Since day one there have been enough votes in the House to fund the government, at least temporarily. Only 17 Republicans need to vote with the Democrats to do that. John Boehner refuses to allow that vote to happen, because he's terrified of the Tea Party. The shutdown is entirely on him.

Exactly. If the bill came up on the floor of the House it would pass with a huge margin. Boehner wants to keep his job as Speaker, but about 2 dozen Tea Partiers will lead a revolt to replace him, and they will be joined by about 3-4 dozen others who aren't as hard core but have to watch their right flank in the primaries. Boehner would either be ousted or severely weakened as Speaker. So he won't allow it to come up. This isn't a fight between Democrats and Republicans, it's a fight between the crazy wing of the Republican Party and the extremely crazy wing of the Republican Party.

It's perfectly true that Congress is a coequal branch of government and the House has no obligation to appropriate money for anything. But if the House will simply refuse to appropriate money for things it doesn't like instead of trying to actually change the law there's no point it having any laws at all. It's a completely dysfunctional way to run a government. The Democrats already gave the Republicans one of the two things they wanted, which was their preferred level of spending, but the Republicans won't take half of what they wanted, they want it all or they won't budge. Nothing has ever been achieved in Congress without some compromise. The Democrats already compromised, now the Republicans won't.

The other part of this problem is Obama doesn't know how to play hardball. Americans already blame the Republicans for this shutdown and oppose undoing Obamacare, and actually voted for Democrats to control the House, but Republicans control it due to gerrymandering, but Obama doesn't know how to use this to his advantage. Obama talks about the budget fight mostly to the media, and in the same genteel, professorial manner that he talks about everything else. He should go on national TV and talk directly to the people and lay out exactly why this is the fault of a small crazy minority in Congress and tell people if they want their food inspected and their national parks open and their school lunches for poor children and their courts running efficiently and their CDC monitoring disease outbreaks and etc etc etc they should let those crazy assholes know how angry they are. He should also not have approved continuing funding for the Pentagon until all the rest of the government was funded--let the Republicans sweat out their favorite program too. Too late for that one. He should also use his Constitutionally granted power to keep Congress in session until they pass a budget--not one single day off on a Sunday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any other day. He should also tell them "remember when I agreed to the overall spending level you wanted and didn't even try to bargain you up? Well guess what fuckers. Every three days the number goes up by $20 billion. The longer you wait the more we're spending. And I'm pulling every single federal resource OUT of the district of any member who tries to block the budget, to the maximum limit of my Constitutional authority. So all you folks pumping oil on federal lands in Texas who sent a Tea Partier to Congress, your permits are revoked effective immediately. All you cattle ranchers out in the arid west whose grazing land is irrigated for free by a federal program? I just shut down the pipes. You commodity crop farmers in the midwest living in Tea Party districts? All your federal crop insurance and USDA food-buying programs are suspended until there's a federal budget."
