I'd argue that for an average amateur involved in a "real" fight, that it is wise to avoid any sort of grappling position. Simply keeping the head as far away from the ground as possible is a good idea.

I agree it is dumb to use the mma label. They might as well also say: "Trayvon jumped Zimmerman with the quickness of a Derrick Rose nba spin move."
