Sure, there's a few hurdles to overcome.
You need to make sure that the pictures you're getting are real and current.
You need to be honest about yourself.
And regarding the transitional awkwardness when you go from the phone to the first in-person meetup, that's usually easy to overcome within a short time if you have actually developed a real connection on the phone (and both people have at least some degree of physical attraction to each other).
The reason this method of meeting women is so effective is because women are a lot more driven by emotion than men, so if you can establish an emotional connection before a real "date" occurs, you already have a huge edge going in.
Why not just establish the emotional connection in person? Because it's a lot easier to do it over the phone. The girls feel a lot more comfortable sharing things with a stranger in that environment, yet it's personal enough to where it's not just cold letters on a screen like talking over the computer. You hear a real voice and you feel like you're connecting with a real human being. I have always described the phone as an exact middle ground between computer communication and in-person communication.
Of course it will fail if you misrepresent yourself, or if you are bad at sniffing out phonies. It will also fail if you're not good at talking on the phone to people, or if you simply don't enjoy doing it. However, I personally found it ideal. I even dated a girl 20 years ago who initially reached me as a wrong number.
I found the ideal situation to be where you know a girl first in person, but establish your real connection on the phone. My son exists because of this. His mother was a girl I was friends with in college, had really liked, but I graduated before being able to do anything about it. We were out of contact for over 16 years, and when we talked again in 2009, we spent many hours on the phone every night for weeks, and built a really strong connection by the time she came to visit me in Vegas. We already had experience with knowing each other in the past, so that removed some of the awkwardness out of the first meeting. Our only concern was whether time had changed us and if our in-person chemistry would be the same as it had been in 1993 (and if it mirrored our excellent 2009 phone conversations). Fortunately everything went really well, which is why I now have a 3-year-running relationship and a wonderful son.

I started reading this thread now, and after reading the 2 questions on the first page by vwls and whoever the other poster was(*edit* abrown), I thought why would those questions matter? I was even more surprised to see you answer them. Don't get me wrong, it is moral and all to not philander, but that wasn't the reason this was such a big deal...as far as I have gathered. I thought it was merely responding to MWH's claims of sexual harassment/assault.
I'm just curious why you felt the need to type that response, outside of simply responding to long-known posters, which I guess would make sense.

Holding all bragging rights as to being the biggest slut at PFA I commend "The no cheating" there...
Affairs of which I've had many cause you to lead a double life which is one of the most hardest things to do and most unsatisfying things...
Plus lowering your respect for sex and bonding with a women...
Honestly in all my flings I can only say that only several were truly fulfilling...
I have a younger brother who met his wife in the 6th grade...40 years later they are still together and happy...
If I could do it all over again that would be my choice also...

The rumors were circulating that there was a great deal of secrecy to the Toots "affair," which perhaps later led in part to the falling out between you.
