This is all really, really bad. Why doesn't Negreanu or someone else with influence tell them how stupid they're being? Maybe I should have taken a job at GG, after all, to prevent debacles like this.
Absolutely nobody likes this.
The advertisement is also super cringe, especially with acting quality which wouldn't score these guys a bit part in a high school play.
The commercial is almost self-aware, regarding how tone deaf this feature was.
"But if you have this calculator, why did I spend years studying ICM?"
Exactly.
Forget study! Forget practice! Just let the WSOP+ App do your thinking for you, and you can close the skill gap between you and the players who spent thousands of hours honing their craft!
They should not be publishing tools within the WSOP+ App for players to use during the tournament which helps them make decisions. The last thing they should be doing is hand-holding the fish to show them that their short stack is worth a lot more than they think, and therefore they shouldn't just relegate themselves into give-up mode.
They also shouldn't be showing everyone how much their ICM increases by registering late, and thereby encourage more late registration. While the live WSOP events attempt to keep the number of busted players secret until after registration closes, it can be deduced or estimated, fed into the calculator, and the average player might say, "Wow, why am I showing up on time, again?"
Just very bad for poker.
If WSOP wants to sell general lessons on how to use ICM to regulate risk of your stack during events, that's fine. Everyone deserves an opportunity to learn.
But here they're providing a tool to help people who HAVEN'T learned this information, and it can change their decisions mid-event. Bad, bad, bad.
If they're going to provide this, why not just provide free usage of GTO Wizard so players can learn the GTO play for every live hand? That will level the playing field, right?
