In the '90s, I had a girlfriend for awhile who looked like the '60s version of Joni Mitchell. Don't ask.
There are and were rumors that Linda Ronstadt was Jerry Brown's beard. At the time, it was assumed Brown was gay, and covering it up. I actually believe she was a beard, but that Brown also wasn't gay.
My belief for the past 35 or so years has been that Jerry Brown is asexual, but nobody understood asexuality in the '70s, so Brown finally had to have a high profile relationship to dispel the gay rumors. Conveniently, he wasn't seen out with Ronstadt that often, claiming that the two just enjoy their privacy.
Brown married a woman named Anne Gust in 2005, and is still married to her 20 years later. However, nobody can find any evidence that Gust had any relationships with men prior to being with Brown. Similarly, there is no evidence that Brown dated any women prior to being with Ronstadt. There is some belief that Gust is a lesbian, and Brown is asexual, and this is a marriage of convenience. It's even possible that both Gust and Brown are asexuals.
Gavin Newsom, of course, is no asexual. He fucked his campaign manager's wife at one point.
Brown was a much better governor than Newsom, including the second time around. Newsom is a slimy, incompetent, chameleon of a politician who stands for nothing. Everything he says and does is in pursuit of further power.
Brown was a guy with strong beliefs and scruples. I didn't agree with a lot of his ideas, but he was no stooge for the Democratic Party. He often angered them by refusing to go along with the party line, breaking away at times from what they wanted. Jerry Brown was always his own man, and was one of the most independent thinking Democratic politicians I've ever seen. For that reason, I actually voted for him the last time he ran for governor -- my one and only vote for a Democrat in my lifetime.
Newsom is a clown and I will absolutely never vote for him.
