Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old man from Florida, has been detained as a suspect in igniting the January Pacific Palisades fire in Los Angeles, which damaged over 6,000 houses and claimed 12 lives.
As he was a former native of the Pacific Palisades, authorities said he knew the neighborhood well. He allegedly started the fire using an open flame after finishing a ride as an Uber driver at around midnight on New Year's Eve.
The suspect is scheduled to make an appearance in court on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Apparently he's been a suspect since mid-January, and he was interviewed on January 24th, with his DNA taken and his possessions searched. Not sure why it took almost 9 months to arrest him.
Among other things, cell phone data placed him as the only person in the area where the fire started, and he accidentally told the police too much on January 24th -- pinpointing the exact location the fire began. This was non-public information at the time.
Additionally, he made three 911 calls to report the fire shortly after it started, and asked Chat GPT, "Are you at fault if a fire is lit because of your cigarettes". He screen shotted his ChatGPT question at the time, as well as recorded his 911 calls. Authorities presume this was him setting up an alibi in advance, in case they pin the fire on him, to where he could show that it was accidental. There would otherwise be no reason to screen shot and record this stuff, unless he was expecting authorities to find it and hoping it would exonerate him.
He also lied to police at various times during questioning. He had requested a few months prior for Chat GPT to draw him pictures of forests burning and people escaping.
Amazingly, he is only facing a potential of 5-20 years in prison, despite the fires causing tremendous destruction and killing 12 people. He should get life in prison for this with no parole.
