I’m all for .gov giving contracts to Palantir and Elon but how much would air marshals cost for the love of god.

At least on the shitty airlines. Some legislation could have those low buck airlines pay for some portion of that public safety. Institute an air marshal fee to ticket purchasers

Feels like an executive order from the king is due

    Effective 05/28/25, today.

Southwest Airlines has announced that checked bags will cost $35, while a second checked bag will cost $45.
After more than 50 years, Southwest Airlines' "bags fly free" policy is finally coming to an end on Wednesday. The new policy only applies to flights booked on or after May 28, which means today is the last day to book if passengers want to avoid the new fee.
In addition to the checked bag fees, a new flight credit policy will also take effect tomorrow, affecting how long Southwest customers can use their travel vouchers.

Discount airlines have their place, as long as they're up front and honest about their differences and limitations (which they're usually not).

They should be required to disclose that the seat pitch (distance between seats) is tiny, and not suitable for people over 5'9".

They should be required to disclose prior to purchase (and in a clear fashion, not fine print) all of the extra fees which aren't typically charged on other airlines.

They should be required to clearly disclose any fare rules or idiosyncrasies which are different than other airlines.

Then, if people want to still purchase a ticket and save money despite the shitty and spartan experience they're likely to have, fine. There are some people who can't afford mainline air travel, who need the discount carriers. As long as people clearly know what they're getting, it's fine.

The problem is that, in most cases, people don't until something goes wrong.

Southwest runs the biggest 737 fleet on earth. But none of them fly to Europe, and that’s no accident.
The airline’s all-737 setup simply isn’t built for transatlantic flying. While the 737 MAX 8 has the range, Southwest would need to certify it for long overwater routes (ETOPS), retrain crews, and rework its operations. And even then, it wouldn’t have business class, hot meals, or long-haul comfort.
There’s no premium cabin, no lie-flat seats, no entertainment built into the seat. Just snacks, WiFi, and decent legroom. That’s fine for a two-hour hop. Less fine when you’re halfway to London.

Instead, Southwest relies on its Icelandair connection. Customers can book through to Europe by connecting in Reykjavik from cities like Denver, Baltimore, and Nashville. It’s a workaround, not a plan.

Meanwhile, rivals like United and Norse Atlantic are expanding across the Atlantic with widebodies, cheap fares, and strong loyalty bases. If Southwest entered now, it would have to undercut everyone just to survive.

Could it happen someday? Maybe. But it would require a new aircraft type, new onboard service, and a whole new strategy.
For now, Southwest is staying home.
