    The 70’s and 80’s were the nadir of the auto industry with all the new emissions laws. Engines were anemic. A Camaro might have had 180hp on a good day.

    Throw a turbo on a terrible engine for a quick horsepower fix.

    I remember the big stir about the Buick Grand National. All black. Mythical beast. Turbo V6 200hp in ‘84. Oooooh!

    These were sad times for Americans. I was raised to consider turbos suspect.

    Donald J Trump rolling back EV mandates will continue the run of the best internal combustion engines humans have ever produced and the cheapest fuel too.

    When I rent cars, I always get a 4 cylinder, and I feel like I'm in hell.

    No power. Brutal when driving non-divided highway and trying to pass people.

    In case you wonder why your car manufacturer started putting in this awful thing, it's the EPA tied incentives for automakers to including this. It's also dangerous. On my last trip, I had the feature turned off, but somehow it turned itself back on mid-drive (a common problem), and I almost got into an accident when pulling into traffic and losing about a second to waiting for the engine to auto-start when I pressed the gas.

    There are tons of stories just like this on Twitter.

    Some vehicles won't even remember that you turned the feature off once you turn off the engine, and you'll have to manually turn it off again when you restart the car. Awful.

    This "feature" is the ultimate in liberal virtue signaling environmentalism. It only very minimally reduces emissions, increases long-term wear on engines, and is dangerous, likely causing a number of serious injuries and deaths each year.

    Almost everyone responding to the tweet agreed with the decision.

    Also on the rental car market, under no circumstances should you book the “managers special” or other similar deals. They are mainly being used to dump the electric vehicles most want no part of for a rental.

    Maybe Druff could talk his way out of it but in most cases you are stuck with the car they give you when you book this deal. Or you have to upgrade at higher last minute rates.

    Yes, the "manager's special" is an awful deal. You get barely any discount, and as mentioned above, they dump whichever vehicles nobody wants, including ones in poor condition. And you have no choice but to take it, unless you want to cancel on the spot and make a new reservation -- if they even let you.

    Oh yes, HATE thjat auto engine stop feature. The Acura and BMW cars here both have it and I have to hit that over ride button every time.

    We did have a 2022 Mercedes Bends A220 here last year and it did not have the auto engine kill feature.

    Out running errands today and got behind an Audi SUV. The engine? A 2.0 liter turbo. This is a big, heavy vehicle with a small, modern engine. Reliable sources tell me the 2.0 liter turbo is amongst the best engines being made today.

    We come from the distant past. A 350, 454, 442, hell even a 305 were considered the standard dudes engine back in the olden days if you wanted your friends to respect you. The 2.0L turbo would toast them all. The turbo chargers of yesteryear are not what's being produced today.

    I've driven all manner of shit boxes in my teens and 20's and the turbos I had were not good cars but what's being produced now has evolved nicely. What I recall is that the cooling systems in the old turbo's weren't sufficient and that the modern engineering has solved these issues.

    As it was I was driving my daughter's 20 year old Honda CRV today. Still a good, safe car for her.

    My neighbor has an Audi Q7. She is forever driving the dealer’s courtesy vehicle.

    A 455 cubic inch Trans Am ala Smokey and the Bandit (with the screaming chicken hood decal) was lame power but looked great and still does to my eye. Yeah a modern little 4 with a turbo would prolly beat it (until it died at 110k)

    There is no way Volkswagen/Audi/Porsche can keep manufacturing vehicles in Germany given their enormous energy deficit. Biden killed them when he blew up the Nord Stream pipeline.

    Is poor engine reliability ever the cause? Toyota is not only putting these in the Tacoma but also the FJ cruiser. I'd need to know a lot more before I sought this out to buy but it sounds like a major advancement in efficiency to me.

    The funny thing about Lexus- I remember the "luxury car boom" as a teenager in the 80s- Acura, Lexus and Infinity being born. But I also remember MB being existence long before them.

    Also, if you go to Germany, isnt MB like real common there and not a big deal?

    Over the last 30 years, I have never seen the need to buy an Audi or Saab vehicle. I have a relative who has gone through cars over the years including a Audi and then about 7 or 8 years ago, she bought her last "forever car"- a Honda Crossover sedan.

    Now I don’t think you’re being completely honest here.

    Of course, you wanted an Audi R8 like cmoney (hall of fame Drexel post btw). You walked by one in a parking lot and gazed at the immaculate mid engine V10 through the clear glass. It had the Bugatti Veyron inspired lines. You came to terms with how inadequate you were as you saw your reflection in that glass.
