Mel Gibson is getting his gun rights back. The U.S. Justice Department, under Attorney General Pam Bondi, has approved the restoration of the actor’s firearm privileges following his 2011 misdemeanor conviction for battering ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

The decision applies under newly published regulations that allow individuals with certain criminal records to earn back gun rights—but it sparked internal controversy. Elizabeth G. Oyer, the department’s pardon attorney, was fired in March after expressing concern over restoring rights to someone with a domestic violence history. She warned there could be “real consequences” from such decisions. Officials claim her dismissal was unrelated.

Gibson, who resides in Nevada, is now eligible to own firearms depending on state laws. Nevada bans gun ownership for felons, but Gibson’s conviction was a misdemeanor.

Earlier this year, President Trump named Gibson a “special ambassador” to Hollywood alongside Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone. Gibson’s team has not issued a comment on the Justice Department’s move.

He directed a film in Nevada and stated he wanted to direct more films in the future in Nevada. Maybe that’s what’s confusing you.

On March 11th, 2025, Gibson conducted an interview with the LVRJ after completion of a movie filmed in Southern Nevada with Mark Wahlberg, who lives in Las Vegas.

As I stated in post (9) Variety is incorrect. They will be posting a correction shortly. Gibson, is NOT a resident of Nevada. Mark Wahlberg who he just directed in a movie is.

Its been confirmed that his Malibu home did burn down and he did try to buy a firearm in Nevada. The only way to (try) to buy a firearm in Nevada is by being a local resident. If he was from CA, he would not have tried it. (edited for clarification) People do buy firearms and have them shipped to their local FFL, but its more difficult as a CA resident as most non-CA approved guns are not on the CA DOJ approved roster.

A lawyer for Gibson had asked the Trump administration to restore the “Braveheart” (1995) actor’s gun rights, saying that in recent years, he had tried to buy a weapon in Nevada but been denied because of the conviction.

To be honest, I really dont care where he lives, I just wanted to focus on the topic of getting his rights back. But keep beating that drum.
