Let's have a reality check here.
First off, I don't need this section of the forum -- or this forum at all -- to get engagement. The truth is that forums are old news now, and the action has moved to social media and Reddit. Look at 2+2. Their NVG section, once so busy that it was impossible to read it all, is sometimes less active than this Flying Stupidity subforum. Almost all forums are now a shell of their former selves.
Second, I could keep this forum and convert it into a more serious, controversy-free place by simply eliminating the Flying Stupidity subforum, and disallow all trolling. That would definitely save me a lot of hassle, and a lot of having to explain myself when people at the WSOP approach me and ask why I allow all the offensive and trash posting here.
So why do I keep it as-is? It's because I've been part of this little subcommunity of degenerates for 21 years now, ever since I showed up on NWP in May 2004 and basically created the atmosphere there. All of the other spinoffs have either failed or never caught on, because it ain't easy to run a place like this, plus it requires constant content creation, as well as a way to draw in new users to replace the ones you naturally lose over time. (Remember boris, circa 2009? Even during the poker boom, it got almost zero new users, despite taking most of NWP's good posters.)
Basically I'm doing this to keep our little community alive, rather than just let it get eaten by the passage of time and the rise of social media. At the same time, I refuse to monetize it because that could compromise my freedom to run it how I want, so not only does it fail to produce revenue, but I lose a little bit on it every year. Cue the jokes about running it at a loss.
I have always liked Gordman, so nothing against him personally. However, when guys like him decide to pop in every few years and ask, "LOL what happened to this place?", they don't stop to realize that their lack of contribution all this time is part of "what happened". Forums need activity to stay alive. You can be the best poster in the world, but if your contribution reduces itself to 3 messages per year, your presence at this point is basically worthless. I'm not going to ban the active posters in order to please those who mostly lurk nowadays.
I'm not keeping this forum up to stroke my ego, either. Where is the ego stroking? I am the recipient of a lot more trolling than praise. The radio show results in a hell of a lot more praise from others than this forum, by a wide margin, and yet I put more time into this side of things.
This is something I'm providing for free, which I gain no material benefit from running. It's more of a legacy project at this point. I'm keeping this community together because of what it was, not because what it will be. I have a soft spot and fondness for it, even with all the aggravation it has given me at times.
I'm not asking you to like all the posters here. I'm not asking for plaudits or thank yous. I'm not asking you agree with my moderation decisions, nor the viewpoints I post. I'm not even asking for you to like or respect me. But at least show some appreciation that I'm keeping this place alive, and have held the community together all these years. To read messages from regulars stating that I'm keeping the forum up because it's "all I have left" is insulting and makes you look like an ingrate for saying it. If you don't like the content here anymore, you know where the door is.
Regarding the radio show, it's not a "delusion" that it gets thousands of listeners. It does. Even YouTube, which wasn't a listening option until late 2023, gets around 500 views per episode, and most of the people listen elsewhere. It's just mostly a different crowd than the forum.
I have a smaller audience than some other poker/gambling podcasts out there, but it's a big enough audience to where I deem it worth doing. If it were 50 listeners, I would have quit many years ago.
If you take a look at my Twitter, you'll see that I recently helped someone who got stiffed out of $87k by Bovada. This was an issue which impacted only a small group of people, but my highlighting of the matter on Twitter got 90,000 views in about 24 hours, and Bovada changed course and paid the guy. This was after about 5 weeks of refusing to pay him and refusing to even let him talk to a manager, where he was basically shut down and told "tough luck". I got him paid $87k within a day. Same thing with that girl Mandi who was almost stiffed out of $240k by Ignition in late 2022. They shut her down, until I made a big deal about it, and again they paid her within a day.
Why am I telling you guys this? Because obviously I do have a social media following and influence in the industry. When I choose to bring up a matter, I can bring public attention to it and get things resolved. People who lack that following or standing in the industry come to me for help, because often their attempts to bring attention to the matter fail. And I'm glad to help them, because I don't like seeing people get ripped off.
I could be perfectly happy shutting down this forum, or even just eliminating this section, and just continuing to do my thing on social media, which is where the action is nowadays.
I don't shut it down because I'm trying to hold together this community, even with the social criticism and sometimes ostracism that comes with some of the content I allow here.
But again, if you think I'm keeping this forum up just to stroke my ego to a few old right wing men showing me admiration, you're always welcome to go elsewhere.
For those who appreciate the effort I put into this forum and site, thank you, and I appreciate you back.
