The SS Retirement System played no roll in creating the national debt. It's a completely separate government system. Workers pay in and the money is paid out to retirees. The system was so succesfull that every year for decades there was a big surplus of money placed in the SS Trust Fund. The Surplus was invested in interest bearing bonds. However, thieving politicians put about half the surplus in the general fund and spent it.
SS was scheduled to go insolvent many times in the past but adjustments were made for it's survival. Since 2021 SS has been running a deficit which has been paid by the Trust Fund. The Fund is scheduled to deplete in 2033. At that time SS will be taking in only enough money to pay out about 75% to 83% of what retirees will be entitled too.
There used to be politicians complaining about all the money Congress stole from SS. But I haven't heard a peep about it in years. Congress should replace that money with interest.
Musk's attempt, if he makes it, to take money out of the SS system will be seen as outright theft by voters.
So what should be done about SS? Well, every time in the past when SS was going to go insolvent they fixed it. That's what should happen this time around. IIRC, back in the sixties the average worker had to pay SS tax for only 6 months out of the year. That's how much the system has changed.
SS benefits being cut is going to be a huge political issue in the future. There are currently 50 million SS retirees. That number is projected to be 70 million in 2032. Thats a huge voting bloc.
Trump has said he won't cut SS. I believe him. I think he knows the consequences. If cuts are made the Dems will jump on the issue like white on rice in order to regain power in 2028.
At any rate, SS is going to be a huge political issue the closer and closer we get to 2033. Republicans better not fuck around or the Dems will be back in the White House.

As well, why are SS contributions capped at $160,000. That used to be an enormous salary. Rapidly that has not turned out to still be the case. Why is it capped at all?
