Really easy to get into if you already have a 5.56/.223 AR.

You can use the same lower, bolt carrier group, and charging handle. You can even use the same mags although I don’t recommend doing so.

All you need is a 300 blackout upper, which you can get for as little as $200.

The link below is to the upper I use.

    https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-...no-bcg-ch.html

Most common 5.56 rounds are between 55-77gr. 300BO range from 110-220gr subsonic rounds. The difference in energy delivered is pretty substantial.

    Edit:
If your AR lower has a stock you’ll need to either swap it out for a brace, pay $200 for a tax stamp to SBR it, or take your chances, since the 300 upper is only 7 inches (making it legally a pistol), or you could just buy a 300 upper with a 16 inch barrel.

This usually sells for $500, then I saw a couple places have them on sale for $400. At $350 I had to pull the trigger.

PSA is currently selling a “blem” version of their AR-V for only $800. The blem is only cosmetic, does not affect performance, and half the time you won’t even be able to find it. It’s a great chance to get something you’ve wanted at a discount. I have this gun and it is worth every penny.

This gun is part AR, part MP5, and takes inexpensive and readily available CZ Scorpion 35rd mags.

If someone was looking specifically for something for home defense, and $800 was in their budget, this is what I would recommend.

For most people, handguns are very hard to shoot accurately, especially under stress, but just about anyone can shoot a pistol caliber carbine with a red dot. You just put the dot on the bad guy and pull the trigger.

    Link below if you’re interested.

what are your thoughts on the bump stocks?

    presuming they remain legal.

I feel the same way about bump stocks as I do about binary triggers. They’re fun to shoot but really just novelties.

I’d rather have a 3.5lb match trigger in anything I might be using to defend myself with.

These are two good options for around $100

The PSA flat 3.5# match trigger for $90 (it was on sale for $80 a couple days ago).

The second being the LaRue MBT-2S for $115. You can often find these on sale for around $90. This is a two stage trigger whereas the PSA is single stage

Otherwise you can’t go wrong with any Geissele trigger, although they can be upwards of $250.

speaking of binary triggers, PSA is selling a Franklin Armory lower (with binary trigger installed) for just $350

binary triggers by themselves normally sell for around $370, although they occasionally go on sale for $320, so you’re basically getting a complete lower for “free”

Geissele Automatics Super AR-15 Charging Handle - Black

The Geissele Super is my favorite charging handle although it can be a bit expensive.

Normally $100+, Primary Arms has them on sale for $65, which is the cheapest I’ve ever seen them, by far. One of mine I bought as a “blem” for $75. Link below if you’re interested.

if you’re gonna run a binary trigger get one of these 22lr conversion kits and save a bunch on ammo

even without a binary trigger, the conversion kits can be a lot of fun, especially for kids. gets them use to the AR’s manual of arms, and you can do some plinking all day for cheap

they can be temperamental and may take some tuning to get them to run reliably

All in for less than $500 including sb tactical folding brace and optic mount. Had a cheap truglo red dot gathering dust - it’ll work fine for 22lr.

    Now just need a can.

Want to get an EDC pistol but not sure what’s out there? The following are the best bang for the buck, imo, and these can usually be found for $400 or less.

Caniks : you can’t go wrong with a Canik. Some of the best out of the box triggers and you can usually find them for $400 or less.

The Mete MC9 is my daily driver.

    https://battlehawkarmory.com/product...r-frame-pistol

Walther PDP: very similar in operation to a Canik (Canik’s are Walther clones). The link below is $600 something bucks, but you can find these on sale for around $400

    https://www.academy.com/p/walther-pd...ady-9mm-pistol

CZ P10 Compact: another great out of the box trigger.

I would totally go S&W Shield 9 2.0 or the Glock 43x for CCW . Nothing else interests me.

all the formerly cheap surplus stuff is expensive now.

really wish I bought a case of those, ak’s, or sks’s years ago

my dad was really into those at one time. I think at one point he had every infantry rifle of any country that participated in ww2. He had an ffl at one point, and then just had an antique and relics license, and he just got one of everything.

You can still get a government subsidized m1 Garand through the civilian marksmanship program tho

yeah i went down the mosin rabbit hole and hoo nelly did things get complicated. but even for a tourist priced one in the $1200-2000 range, compare that to a modern shooting system and youre probably still paying < 10% of the cost of admission.
