Mainly because it brought few positives and a lot of potential negatives. Your VP nominee should always be a net positive, and preferably one who helps you in swing states. Trump didn't need help in Ohio, and Vance was unlikely to appeal to anyone Trump didn't already appeal to. At the same time, Vance had too much baggage, too many extreme opinions, and was even on record harshly bashing Trump in 2016.
The only exception to this was McCain's choice of Sarah Palin. Despite Palin's obvious flaws, this wasn't a stupid pick. Why? Because McCain was getting crushed, so this was a Hail Mary attempt to shake things up. Had he picked a "safe" VP, he was 100% assured to lose. His only chance was to hope Palin scored him extra votes, both with women and with conservatives who otherwise were going to sit it out or vote third party. It didn't work, and Palin was a disaster, but it was a reasonable shot when he was otherwise on a sure path to losing.
This was obviously different, as Trump was AHEAD in polling when he picked Vance.
In politics, when you're ahead, the strategy needs to be, "Don't fuck it up, and don't take chances." Trump was talked into disregarding this strategy, and now he's paying for it.
Fortunately for him, the Dems hate Jews so much nowadays that Kamala couldn't bring herself to pick Shapiro for her VP. That would have given her Pennsylvania and the election. Instead she picked Walz, who will probably not move the needle overall. He has both positives and negatives, and those will probably end up a wash. Kamala was winning Minnesota anyway. Another dumb pick, but for a different reason. She left a pick on the table which would have given her a huge swing state. Trump made a pick which had the potential to drag him down.
I am hearing that Trump very much has buyer's remorse with Vance, but can't take it back without looking really bad (and also sending Vance on the warpath against him).

Just as Druff’s 80’s signaled an end to the protest, and anger of the late 60’s and 70’s. 80’s Americans had enough and shamelessly pursued happiness and materialism. Awful music and feel good entertainment ruled the land.
