Trump is played out. I'm not so much talking about his status with conservatives, which perhaps he can regain among some of them. I'm talking about his status with independents and moderates. They don't like him. They voted him out of office in record numbers in 2020. This last election cycle proved that people will elect an incoherent braindead person (see Fetterman, John) over a candidate with a ton of baggage.
It's Desantis' time. I'm sure his people are already planning upon how to properly respond to Trump's attacks. They won't be blindsided like the 2016 Republican field. Who thought Jeb Bush would be brought down by being called "low energy", and Marco Rubio's hopes would be dashed by a suicide attack by Chris Christie?
Taking on Trump will be a lot tougher than beating a nincompoop like Charlie Crist, but I think Desantis will be up to the task.
