From talking to random Swedes, people from that area use the name of the municipality instead of the locality. - In the early-mid '90s, I lived in eastern Riverside, which at the time was a very violent place (it's since been cleaned up somewhat)

- In the mid-late '90s, I worked in Compton

I even lived in a neighborhood in 2000s Las Vegas which wasn't particularly good at night.

One thing that can't be said about me was that I sheltered myself in gated suburbs and didn't see the gritty parts of LA. I haven't been afraid to venture into bad neighborhoods. I just told a story on radio that, in 2006, my then-girlfriend and I asked for a tour of the "real Ocho Rios" where we'd be taken into the parts of the city where the tourists didn't go, so we could see Jamaican life as it actually was.

Hell, you can't even play in an LA area poker room without setting foot in an area with at least somewhat of a crime problem.

The opinion of retarded trolls on the forum doesn't mean anything. In my 20+ years in poker, I've always treated women respectfully at the table. Never a single incident of talking down or making advances. That's how I've always been away from poker, as well.

When I started the job, a lot of fellow computer dorks there told me not to go out into that neighborhood, and to just eat at the wokplace cafeteria. I did this for like 2-3 days and got sick of the shitty food there really fast.

So I started going out every day to a rotation of places where I was a regular. Because the area was mostly industrial/commercial, it wasn't that bad during the day. But it was Compton, and this was the 1990s when crime was pretty bad.

One of the times I went to Jack in the Box for the drive thru, I saw it was closed off with police tape, so I went somewhere else and wondered what happened.

Turned out that a guy was carjacked in the drive thru lane and stupidly refused to give up his keys, and was shot dead. Happened about 45 minutes before I got there. The victim was rich and owned a nearby large business, and obviously had insurance. Not clear why he decided to risk his life to protect the car. Funny enough, I was taking a late lunch that day, and would have been there right around the moment of the carjacking had I gone at the normal time.

I was just born there. We left when i was 3. It was an immigrant neighborhood then and it still is. Just the color of immigrants changed. Doesn't really matter. Point was that between me and Druff, one of us was born in the projects.

When talking about safety and whatever Americans don't really understand what WWII, collapse of USSR and civil war in Yugoslavia did just for starters. My father was born in a part of Finland that now belongs to Russia. My great grandfather fought in Finnish civil war. When my parents moved back from Sweden we lived a few years in the same house. He lived to 95. My older brother did two tours in Yugoslavia. None of this is out of the ordinary. I have fairly good idea what war is.

When Soviet Union collapsed everything was for sale. Criminals in Europe have had a fairly good supply of military hardware ever since. Nice thing about Kalashnikovs is that they're made to last. All Nordic countries have conscription and as a result there are weapon depots all over the place. Most of the time larger criminal groups avoid wars, because they tend to get out of hand. Last major feud where Finns were involved was the Nordic Biker Wars in the mid 90s. They used anti-tank rockets, grenades and other random explosives to blow up each others club houses and related businesses.

It wouldn't be fair to compare your experience in Sweden with that of someone in New York or LA or any other US city. Maybe the bloods and crips or MS13 were a problem for Sweden when you were born or some other gang of ruffians. Have you ever spent any significant time in a US city? Almost nobody wants innocent people in jail. I think a good majority now would say simple drug use is not a good reason to incarcerate anyone. However, there are a lot of murders and rapes here and as Sanlmar so credibly points out we have a major problem with gun violence. People kill their own kids and put them in dumpsters. Horrific, unspeakable crimes happen here every day. Those who commit those crimes belong in jail, incapable of causing further harm to society. Nobody wants there to be injustice. I almost always respect and appreciate what you have to say Gimmick but, to point to our prison numbers as something other than there being a real and dangerous crime problem is not your best moment imo.

To be fair, country, you don't live in a city... far from it.
