my first introduction to this as a phenomenon was watching earth first and peta morph into what they are today. back in the 80s, both were actually super reasonable orgs that were easy to be proud of. now in fairness, the fbi cointel goons started 'suggesting' that earth first shift from spiking trees to pipe bombing cars, but im pretty sure peta just went foul on its own because of exactly this sort of thing and earth first likely would have moved in a similarly inane direction for the same reasons.
its absolutely not a phenomenon singular to the left or right.
but of course, where the left riots for the basic human right of citizens not to suffer extrajudicial assassinations by the dumbest people in high school, the right wing are the dumbest people in high school, so its not exactly two sides of the same coin.
