The Iowa winner has only gone on to win the presidency 3 times (Obama, Bush II, Carter).

In the end, two insignificant states for most average elections...but this isn't your average election per se.

It's a fair point. That said no GOP nominee has ever not won Iowa or New Hampshire.

From that perspective they are important.
