nunbeater: such an ironic usage of the photo. The difference between rollo and the kid is that it is not the kid's fault he is retarded.

Okay, I'm still a little unclear about something here.

Let's say she got the $2000 MRI. She still has $1500 left.

Was that money ever returned to the donators?

I have to admit that it's kinda bullshit to collect money and hold part of it for later "in case these cheap treatments don't work".

Did she give any timetable to return the $ if she opts not to have any kind of surgery, or can't raise the additional money for it?

BTW, vets (animal doctors, not military) are often some of the biggest scammers out there.

Many take advantage of people's attachment to their pets (and inability to accept the fact that their pets' lifespans are much shorter than their own), and will both overcharge and perform unncessary tests/surgeries just to put more money in their pocket.

Our family dog, a Springer Spaniel, lived a very long time for her breed. Springers average about 12-13 years, and it is very rare for one to reach its 15th birthday. Our Springer was 14 and a few months, and was clearly on her way out. The vet suggested all kinds of ridiculously expensive tests for her. My mom declined, saying that the dog was clearly at the end of her life, and that surgery or other major treatments would simply put her through pain and would unlikely prolong her life more than a few months (if at all). Instead of just backing down, the guy had the nerve to say to her, "Well, okay... if you don't care about your dog, that's fine."

The dog ended up living a few more months and died at 14 1/2. She did not appear to be in pain at all when she died, and seemed to have deteriorated more mentally than physically.

This wasn't an isolated incident. I have had friends and acquaintances constantly tell me horror stories about money-hungry vets.
