no doubt preparation helps. a lot. to me the more prepared i was going in, the more comfortable i was in front of the jury, and therefore the better i performed and could then evaluate when to take more aggressive chances/positions or when to tone it down, etc. however, there is nothing like experience and being able to read the room and think on your feet. the better you are at this, the less preparation you need. combined is the lotto number.
anyway, my real reason for responding was to say this and then see if you concur:
easily half of the good, not even great, trial lawyers i know, would blister either of them in a debate. like without preparation. they are both frauds.

Harris gives her first interview tomorrow night in 40 days. But here is the deal, she has to have Tim Walz next to her in the interview. Look, she obviously can't think on her feet, its not to say she is dumb, its people choke when under pressure. I remember years ago I was with a female Executive VP in a meeting, it was in a room full of people. We were trying to close a deal. I was like 25 at the time, and it was my first closing meeting. The questions from the client were fast and furious, and like 5 minutes in he voice started to crack, and she began looking at me to answer. It was clear halfway through I was running the meeting, and I actually got up and walked around the room to liven it up. Now we did not win the deal, but I was approached a month later by the firm I was in front of to ask if I was interested in a job (I declined because it required to relocate).
Point is Walz will be there for the interview as a security blanket. In the debate she is going to have to fill up 90 seconds per answer, its clear she cannot do it. If I am Trump I simply stare at her while she is answering. If he does that, there is a 50-50 chance she complains and just walks off the stage. Just watch, she is flat out awful and gets nervous.
The "interview" is being conducted by Dana Bash. How shocking that they get one of the most partisan and dishonest hacks at a network full of them to do it. Here is a recent example of her antics:

Bash played a deceptively edited clip from the X Space interview where Trump and Musk discussed some of the risks involved with nuclear energy, particularly if people are able to move back to areas where nuclear power-plants have had accidents.
The clip that Bash played for CNN viewers contained the following exchange:

TRUMP: Right. Right. Right. That’s great.
MUSK: So, it’s not as scary as people think basically.
After Bash played the clip, she said that they were “sort of suggesting that what happened almost 80 years ago next year, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, now it’s okay.”
Bash’s remarks were a blatant distortion of what Musk and Trump were discussing.
What really happened was Trump started talking about what he believed the greatest threat was to the U.S. and to the rest of the world, which he said was “not climate climate,” but the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

I was on a jury of a fairly high profile case where I lived. The Prosecutor while at the trial did not say one word, she delegated it to two young lawyers. I am quite sure that is what Harris did in her career.

Trump, all sizzle no steak, relies almost completely on crowd work. It is the only reason he is a candidate for president.
Trump's name calling, bombastic claims and outright lies don't work in a proper debate. Teleprompters, notes and a live audience are not allowed in this debate which means Trump is a dead man talking.
He knows nothing but hyperbole.
Charisma or likeability is very important in a country obsessed with image. Harris is proving to be no slouch here. She's not an old man selling bibles to the poor and cutting taxes for the very rich. She will run Trump over in this debate.
