i feel like i should get a drone

Ordered a Mavic Pro last week and sent it right back, box unopened, upon discovering how much red tape and regulation there is in Las Vegas.

Yeah I lucked out I guess; I'm in a 'caution area' not a 'no fly area'. But I'm amazed that when you plot points in the app, they get sent to DJI, which is outrageous, and I've heard said that if the app cant connect to DJI you are basically grounded, which I reallllly dont want to believe.

There is a pay app that runs about $23 that looks like it's well worth the money and might more or less cut the cord with DJI.

Also somehow surprised that there is no open-firmware movement for the Mavic Pro yet.

Fortunately I'm in an area which isn't within 5 miles of an airport, so I have a decent sized area I can fly it, with some interesting hill/mountain scenery.

I am afraid to update the DJI app, because I'm afraid of overly controlling shit like I mentioned above. But then I'm afraid NOT to update it, because it has bugs/crashes, and that could turn out pretty badly. So I updated once, after the drone crash (in order to utilize the features to help find it), but I don't want to do it again.

The most annoying thing is the ban of drones in National Parks and National Recreation Areas. This makes sense in certain tourist-heavy places like Yellowstone, but it doesn't make sense in a huge, lightly-visited park/rec-area where it would make most sense to fly a drone. After all, drones are supposed to fly over landscapes and away from cars/people/roads, so wouldn't this be the perfect area to fly them?

The ban isn't even permanent or well thought-out. They just made a blanket ban in 2015 while they decide what to do, and haven't updated it since.

How is this "fake news"? This guy's channel is not news. It's fucking entertainment. Anyone with half a brain can see that the supposed video feed from the quadcopter is fake.

And I posted it to this forum, where the readers are hopefully more discerning than the general public. I didn't post it to Facebok with an accompanying fearful screed because I know too many people might think it's a legit device. DRK Star and 4Dragons might get hard-ons watching it as they wonder where they can buy it, but give it a fucking rest! You're just reaching for a reason to justify dinging me.

This is going to sound weird, but I have been traumatized by that crash and have barely flown the drone since, even though I recovered the drone, it wasn't really damaged, and I didn't damage anything on the ground.

I keep feeling like it's going to crash again and really cause some damage.

Part of the reason I haven't flown is also due to the fact that LA gets very ugly in the summer and early fall, so there's more motivation to fly in the winter/spring.

But the winter/spring also brings a lot more rain and wind, so it's also tougher to find approproate days to fly it.
