if you stay at the palms, be prepared for cab drivers to be outright ignorant to you when you tell them you're going to the rio

they are straight assholes about it, like "DUDE IT'S RIGHT THERE!"

yeah, i know asshole but it's also 110 degrees so i'd rather not look like i just jumped in a swimming pool by the time i walk that half mile
I won't be going to the Rio at all. I have at least 3 meetings at the Palms, 1 at the Wynn, 1 at the Venetian and a meeting yet to be scheduled at either Bellagio or Aria.

Either way I always drive from Casa Del Bootsy to Vegas. However I do see your point if I was a tourist who flew in. Either way I recommend renting a car while there.

this was a HUGE mistake on my part

partly because i didn't know i'd end up staying two weeks

being stuck in a vegas hotel for more than a few days without a car is the worst kind of hell, and i will never voluntarily subject myself to again

that's funny, not sure how many somali cab drivers there are in vegas but i had one too

he was pretty cool, but i was also going to the strip at the time

honestly, if you ever want to see the worst humanity has to offer, just get a cab from rio to palms or vice versa

it NEVER fails. they are such dicks, i wanted to beat this guy's ass i was so tilted

I've only been to Vegas once without a car and I will never make that mistake again.

I took a cab from Aria to the M Resort to play a HORSE tourney and meet Micon and Drexel and had a very angry and slow Chinese cab driver who almost got into 3 accidents on only 10 miles on the 15 and almost went on the wrong side of the road exiting St. Rose to the M.

Needless to say I certainly did not give him a cash tip but a highly motivational tip to find a reputable driving school.

EDIT* I have flown in to Vegas several times but those were business trips where I fly in and out the same day. I have never been in a cab since.

Stayed there a few years ago with my wife. Get a strip view room for sure. Might be the best view in the city. Room was really nice. Long walk to the casino and to the Rio.

If you don't want to stay at the Rio, IMO rent a car and stay at TI. You will actually most likely save money, and I don't think for the price you can beat the rooms. TI also has the easiest parking garage to deal with on the strip. In and out super easy, and always tons of parking past level 3. You could easily jump on I-15 to Flamingo, or take the back way off Industrial and go right to the Rio convention center parking lot. 7-8 minutes tops from garage to parking. Plus, staying there puts you right in the heart of a great part of the strip IMO, and you can run on over to Venetian for some of their tourneys or cash games as well when not playing WSOP.

Lately I've been renting out in Summerlin, but a good option is staying at the Gold Coast. It's inexpensive, a short walk to the Rio, and the rooms have recently been renovated, and are actually quite nice. Plus the Chinese restaurant in it is excellent.

    Cool

Renting a car is -EV when there are free shuttles. Use the money for something else imo. I always stay at Paris and walk thru the shops to Ballys to catch the shuttle. They run every 15 minutes. I do agree that a room at the Rio is convenient for crashing and having a meal tho. Ive heard other players talk abt the Gold Coast and that the rooms are reasonable and not that bad. They also have a shuttle that takes you to Ballys and then you can cross the bridge to Bellagio and take tram to Aria. Walking a little ways in doors is good for you when you are going to be sitting so long. A short walk outside is good to get some fresh air too.

Even in August, it's a dry heat bro.

everything in vegas looks closer than it actually is because of the scale

my first time touching down in vegas it looked like i could just walk to the mgm from the airport

one of the times i took a cab from rio to palms was during day 1 dinner break

you have 90 minutes and 10 of those are spent just maneuvering the hallways to the front of the casino

i thought the smart play was to go where 2000 other people weren't trying to eat at once, so i took a cab to the palms to eat at the food court

there was no god damned way i was walking

i was willing to pay a premium to shorten that trip and i tipped well, even to the guys who were assholes

it's just amazing how brazen they were, any other person in the service industry would be fired for that

Driving in this city for years will teach you to truly despise the cabbies here. Hearing that you did this to some of them gave me a chuckle. A lot of times they have to wait in a long line to pick up a passenger, so when a guy gets in and only wants to go across the street that is a big loss in their minds. Luckily for the cabbies that picked you up you were cool about it.

What dates are you going and do you have an MLife card?

I'm tentatively going 6/28-7/3 and can get a Stay Well Room for $80 a night plus the lame resort fee through MLife.

Rooms shouldn't be that much, if I remember correctly if you have a card and are playing any wsop events at all you get a big discount. Big discount meaning $100 avg including weekends for 7 days. If you are staying just weekdays it would be cheaper. I like the Rio rooms because they are huge

Whatever you do , do not stay at Planet Hollywood if you get a rental car unless you are looking to walk a mile through a mall every day to get your car.

I also suggest a rental car even if you don't plan to use too much. Just going to and from the airport in a cab will be half the money you spend on a rental. You can also use it to hit stores off strip if you need anything and hit up some restaurants etc... or if you want to check out any touristy stuff one day

Another vote for Gold Coast, super cheap and super close.

But if you plan on playing at other places, I'd go Monte Carlo
