The lawyers he hired took only one thing into consideration: The fact that Micon was able to pay them their retainer.
Criminal defense attorneys are typically not very picky regarding the cases they take. This is because they get paid whether they win or lose. It's not like a personal injury attorney who only gets paid on contingency when he wins, so he has to weed out the longshot cases.
Also, if they can somehow pull off a miracle and get Micon off of this one (or get him a severely reduced punishment), this will be yet another feather to put into their cap, as this is a high profile case. And if they can't help him, this won't look bad for them, as it's clear that the evidence against Micon is very strong.
It seems at this point that his attorneys are just advising him to come back to Vegas and face this. I'm assuming that they told him they can't do much more until he comes back, though they can likely analyze the complaint and figure out what his chances are of beating it (which must be pretty damn low).

The reason Micon is scrounging for lawyers is to avoid jail time. It is not going to happen. The NGC and DA did not have a press conference to have some type of house arrest.
I have known two people that have been to jail, neither were assaulted, its not maximum. Micon will spend a year at an honor ranch and pay a fine if he is smart. Then he can write a bitcoin book.
His worst decision ever was to flee to a 3rd world country and open up a poker site. My gosh how stupid are you? You added minimum 3 months to your sentence. Going to Antigua was ridiculous.
I've had a few people ask me if it's safe to play on SWC Poker right now and imo it actually isn't that risky IF you just put on a small ass amount the day you want to play and cash all of it out immediately that night when you are done. Payouts are still going very fast from everything I've continued to hear but I'd never use that site to continue to store the money leaving a lot in Micon's hands because even though I don't think he would ever intend to steal from anyone what if he they get him in custody, the site gets shut down, or he must spend the money for his legal shit?
SWC funds still actually have more value then Merge dollars do atm.

Meanwhile back in Vegas, Chenoff is today focused on whether bail is even a remote possibility. Is Micon a flight risk? It is possible you guys are way ahead of yourself with Chenoff & Micon's defense. Bail is a deal breaker for the kid, imo. The retainer may just be for dealing with this question.

If bail can't be negotiated this gets a lot more fun as Micon starts shopping for a used dinghy. The argument that Micon won't run b/c he has a wife & kid makes no sense to me. If he is in jail, they retreat to her family. Micon is useless to them. They split up. He will think it best.
The case is tough enough without meeting your client in the big house.
I wonder about hidden assets. I firmly believe the same guy who may have had the balls not to cash at $400 then $600, $800, $1200 also likely rode it back down. However, is there a small something squirreled away that he patently refuses to touch for fear of tipping it's location - and thus, the fundraising. Micon's last ditch go-bag.

Edit: I saw China's post of Micon interviewed with Alex. I cannot get over the pencil arms on this guy. He has the build of a Biafran war baby. The notion of jail (any jail - hell the Nevada DMV) while awaiting a hearing has got to fill him with terror.

I agree that this isn't a bad idea. Doubt he'll do it, though.
I said before that Micon broke the law for profit. That was true, but it wasn't the whole story.
He ran Seals, despite the immense personal (and family) risk involved, for both profit and adulation. He saw himself as a warrior for gambling freedom. He saw himself as the benevolent figure who would bring poker to anyone on the globe who wanted to play it, laws be damned. And most importantly, he wanted everyone to recognize that he was this benevolent and heroic figure.
On the surface, this doesn't seem bad. In fact, it seems downright noble to risk your own freedom for the high-minded pursuit of offering online poker to those deprived of it by foolish laws.
Unfortunately, that decision also came with a large degree of carelessness and irresponsibility. After all, if your decision to offer poker to everyone puts the entire site at risk, then you are doing a disservice to your players by not mitigating that risk.
As you mentioned, look at Bovada. Would they love to take new business from Nevada, Delaware, and New Jersey? Sure. But they don't, because they want to be able to continue offering the product to the other 47 states, and touching those other 3 would put themselves at risk.
Bovada is not stuck on some haughty idea that EVERYONE must be able to play there, and that anything less than that is yielding to the man. No... they assessed the risks and made judgment calls.
But I can't see Micon doing that. He doesn't want to yield to "the man" and remove anyone's freedom to play on his site. He thinks that's not the bitcoin way.

I signed a lease about 1.5 months ago to come here on vacation with my family, and I wasn't charged with any crime.

I appreciate the response, even if it phrased negatively.
I am not a lawyer, but can speculate the licencing requirements for a bitcoin poker site that does no business outside of the bitcoin protocol may be different from traditional fiat-based online gambling sites.
Some don't consider bitcoin money, and some do. The protocol is outside all other banking systems, operating in it's own network. I have a team working hard to determine the course of action from here regarding license requirements. It is truly uncharted territory.
On the subject of "fighting to clear my name," I have not been charged with any crime, and I wasn't operating the site. I was in charge of marketing and affiliate duties at SealsWithClubs. I stand firm on my history, if you investigate what users had to say about SealsWithClubs it is in general a glowing review with thanks for operating ethically in what have always been murky waters. While I was not selected at random I do not feel I have done anything wrong. It is also important to understand I was not charged with a crime and never have been charged with a crime in my 36 years. I am a family man first and foremost and try very hard to spend each day with my 2 year old daughter and wife. I hope to prove to you that I am not "America's trash," but a forward-thinking businessman looking to pioneer a new industry and use profits for social good. I think a "Bitcoin silicon valley" is possible for Antigua, which would bring many jobs and spread the bitcoin technology to local businesses. I want to make a positive impact on my surroundings, wherever I may be at the time.
