Great fight. Lopez humiliated himself in the postfight interview - really pathetic. That's what can happen when a man has to come to terms with his career being in shambles.
I understand struggling to score a round. But to interpret Lopez' difficulties as merely the seeds of a glorious upset? Nuts. Salido owns Lopez. They could fight 10 times and I'm convinced the outcome would be 10 knockouts.
Welcome to the politics of boxing. I don't know how anyone could have Lopez ahead in that fight. He scored that knockdown, and there were a couple of pretty close rounds, but all in all, it was clearly Salido's fight.
Lopez tried to convert back to "boxing" with Salido, and he was having success, but Salido was doing a good job of getting to him, and when he got there, doing damage. That moving, dancing, biking it all over the ring really takes a lot out of you. It takes a guy with excellent stamina to successfully stay on the move for 12 rounds. Lopez doesn't have that kind of stamina. And JuanMa leaving that fucking right hand low was so silly. How many times do you need to get tagged right on the chin, before you pick that fucking hand up?
Hex is right, he really embarrassed himself with that post fight interview. Saying the ref was a "gambler", and that's why he stopped the fight. And to even suggest that he was "dominating the fight", was pure comedy.
Really no reason for a 3rd fight. This one wasn't really that close.
One last try at this with Sergio.
Martinez/Macklin OVER 9.5 rounds -110
Martinez by decision +231
One thing I hate about MMA refs is the ever present "You gotta work!!"
Like DUH, obv he/she knows they gotta work, if they are losing.
Ya don't hear the refs do this shit in Boxing.
Thank god Lopez got stopped, otherwise the story wouldn't have been "great fight" (which it definitely was), it would have been "another boxing robbery."
I've since softened my stance regarding JuanMa's post fight interview. Dude apologized, and regardless of the sincerity - which, if absent, actually speaks to Lopez' desire to win. He looked lousy in this fight, but he never stopped trying to finish Salido - not steal rounds, not eke out a decision, but put Salido on his ass and keep him there. Salido's face, and his quite possibly being saved by the bell after the knockdown, speak to Lopez being effective while practicing a rather rudimentary brand of violence. Lopez has regressed but his mettle hasn't corroded.
