The Final Straw For Me and Sports Betting...

I hate bad beat stories, so I tell this as more of a humorous tale as opposed to a woe is me sort of thing.

The year was 2003. I was betting sports pretty heavy back then, and would somehow find the most painful ways to lose games. I mean 5 or 6 team parlays that would lose on the last play of the last game type of shit on the regular. As we all know, that shit wears on you over time.

So I felt very strongly about a certain game... Jacksonville -3 vs New Orleans. At the time Jacksonville was actually pretty good, and they were playing really strong D. New Orleans had been playing like shit. Plus, they had Aaron Brooks, who IMO sucked. I felt -3 was practically a lock...



Come game time, Jacksonville dominated pretty much the entire game. Fred Taylor ran for almost 200 yards, yet they could never pull away enough to feel very comfortable. That was until 7 seconds left in the game with New Orleans on their own 20 with no time outs. Game over. High fiving friends... Feeling good!!!!

Then this happened...









If this miracle wasn't bad enough, Jay Carney, who hadn't missed an extra point since 1997, missed that extra point to completely fuck me. I could have still had a chance to win, or at least push.

I still remember that shit like it was yesterday.

I actually remember a 1 point safety happening when I was in 8th grade. It's a college only rule

According to this and this, the same rule exists in the NFL, but it has never happened.

Interestingly, at the college level, the defense can score 2 points by returning a missed kick or interception or fumble all the way back. I've never heard of that, but it apparently it happens several times a year in Division 1.

Even weirder: the defense can score 1 point on a safety! I guess this happens if the defense returns the ball all the way back to their side of the field, then loses the ball, then the offensive team recovers in their own endzone and gets brought down. I'd be curious to know if this has ever happened at any level.

Have you ever seen the fair catch kick rule applied in the NFL?

After a punt is fair caught, the receiving team has the option to kick the ball off the tee without any defensive rush for a field goal. Tom Landry used it with the Cowboys a couple of times. Did it right before half time. Haven't seen it used since.

Respect for overcoming gambling addiction. I don't follow NFL but considering the draft system I imagine the playing field is too level to make it worth betting on as there's no value due to the unpredictable nature of the beast when compared to other sports.

I'm halfway joking here but we've all taken several terrible beats and you got to have thick skin in this world.

If vegas was getting killed over a long time in betting and this helped him quit then that is good.

I never bet money I couldn't afford to lose. Between poker and sports betting I actually have a respectable ROI. To me though it was more about the stress involved with running bad. I am probably bothered by losing more than most people, which is something I can't shake. It's a good quality to have because in other aspects of life it creates drive. But as far as gambling goes, which is something you have no control over once your money goes in, I figured life is too short to be stressed out over shit like that. Admittedly it got to me over the years, and I just got tired of it.
