A few guys quietly playing poker in private surroundings using THEIR OWN MONEY... Then BAM.... A fucking SWAT team armed to the teeth come bursting in?

Where there is a lot of cash Police feel other illegal activity is going on 100%. Some of the money gambled with in that game could be made through illegal methods like drugs,etc.. but still catch them on the street and not on a tip they receive about a poker game going on.

Any money police can seize in ways that are shady they don't care if they can get away with it. Free $$$ to the city. Lots of corruption going on which has for years but continues to get worse everyday.

I get that gambling (even on private property) is illegal and police are just enforcing the law..... It's a hideous fucking law like, but there it is.


What I can't get my head around is the need for a SWAT team... That is way beyond anything you will find in the vast majority of civilized countries.

because businesses want government protection such as police, fire and the judicial system to enforce contracts, those businesses should pay for those services, and most do by licensing fees...this one didn't

also you don't mention communities can regulate the location of businesses into designated areas via zoning laws and requiring permits, this business had no zoning permits--indeed, who wants an all night business operating nightly/weekly/monthly right next door? can't a residential neighborhood be free of unauthorized intrusion from commercial interests?

neither of us are experts in police science, but i think the choice of manpower and weapons selection is best left to police professionals and civilian police review boards...no one was hurt, the law was enforced...and with so much money in one place, i would claim it is foreseeable that those at the game were armed to defend against invasion robberies, thus an overwhelming show of force by police to preempt a violent response is supportable imho, perhaps experts hold contrary views, i don't know
