Jesus, how does that even happen.

If my math is correct, thats like two players getting it all in with $1500 a piece at 1/2nl.
Of all the money e'er I had, I spent it in good company

They pretty much let you buy-in with any amount in this game, and they tend to measure sessions in days, so it's not too crazy to see two big stacks like that. The best part is, even with the pot they don't know if he was up or down for the sssion!
I write things about poker at my Poker Blog and elsewhere on the Internets

Take it with a grain of salt that I play with some ridiculously degen guys in the local home games, but I have seen $4K pots in a 50 cent/ dollar game where the buy in was $200 max or half of the big stack at the table. About a month or so ago, there was a guy stuck for over $7K in the game one night.

I have saw $3000-$4000 pots quite often in a local $1/$3 game. Its not absolutely abnormal.

The game plays a lot like a rebuy tourney in the beginning. There are a couple of guys that will pretty much get it in with anything so that someone at the table has a stack bigger than $400 so you can buy more than $200 in chips. Once I finally understood that, the game became infinitely easier to beat.

why don't they just raise the buy-in amount?

The low buy in gets people into the game in the beginning that would not play if there were players buying in for $500 or $1000. You would be surprised how many players will come in thinking that they can buy into the game for $100 and beat the game. The game starts at 8 and there is a full table with 5 or 6 waiting by 8:30, but there are 3 or for guys that will drop between $100 and $200 then leave. By then end of the night it is usually playing like a $2/$5 game at a casino i.e. $20 or more to see a flop but not a lot of crazy preflop shoves like there is early in the night.
