I ACTUALLY GOT PAID FROM A CLASS ACTION. (against LCD manufacturers for price fixing)

It was quite awhile ago (maybe about a year or so) but I decided to click on one of "those" emails - i think it was even in my spam folder but I cant be certain. I followed through on the instructions to file a claim, which took me less than 5 minutes.

Recently I received this check in the mail. I'm actually pretty stunned. Its only $260 but I kind of feel like I won the lottery or something especially over the fact that of all of the class actions out there, the one that I decided to actually click on essentially paid out. I can't imagine this type of thing happening like this very often.

Oh yeah, what also stunned me is that I didn't have to provide any verification (proof of purchase etc) or anything. Literally the only info i gave them was my contact info and answered their short questionnaire on what I purchased during the years. I tried to make the claim size of tv's plausible/reasonable, but im sure at this point I could have even literally filed for more and they probably wouldn't have even blinked at it.

    That's awesome.

Just about all of my class action claims never send me a dime (despite what they promise), and when they do, it's either some LOL amount like $7, or a gift card for $20 in services I don't need anymore.

For example, Sprint once sent me a $20 calling card (LOL) after being caught overcharging me and other customers like $25/year for many years. Sweet deal for them. Lots of uses for calling cards these days, right?

Anyway, the reason they didn't demand verification is because the whole class action process is corrupt and just a way for attorneys to make money.

So a shyster finds some sort of legitimate unfair/illegal business practice committed by a large company, starts a class action, the company realizes they're fucked and settles for some large sum, the lawyers take most of it, and then the remainder gets distributed to people identified in the class. Nobody gives a shit who actually gets it, because the lawyers already got paid, the company already forked over the money, and it's just a matter of whose pocket it lands in. Usually any flimsy claim gets paid if there's enough to go around. Of course, sometimes there isn't enough to go around, so that's where the arbitrary denials occur, and why you often get zero (without notification, too).

I always fill out the claim form and pride myself as a class action nit. Highlights: I got $125 back for the Madden/NCAA Electronic Arts suit, some money back from a shady health insurer, and of course hilarious small checks like the $1.32 I got from JP Morgan Chase via the Classmates.com action lawsuit.

I know Facebook has a big one coming up which I think they'll pay everyone who signs up, aka everyone on the internet, like $25 or something lol

In 2003 I bought $1,600 worth of Huffy Bicycle Corp. stock (New York Stock Exchange). Speculative penny stock play.

Lost most of the small investment to accounting fraud and the stock was delisted from the NYSE as it stayed below $1 for over 30 days. Cashed out with only $450 or so.

Even though the fraud cost me about $1,200 I finally received a $125 check in 2010 (SEVEN YEARS LATER!) from a class action suit related to the fraud. Woo-Hoo!

I got a bunch of money back from Ticketmaster due to some kind of government action against them for price fixing. I didn't even do anything just a refund & an email from ticketmaster announcing the refund.
