In 1999, I was dating a new girl, shortly after a 3-year relationship ended. This girl also had a long relationship, one of 5 years, end on almost the exact same day mine did. We bonded over that, despite not having much in common otherwise.
Shortly into our early dating, I came down with a cold. It was a different cold than I had ever seen, primarily taking the form of a recurring sore throat, which would be bad in the morning, moderate in the afternoon, and then return to hurt a lot at around 6pm. It also carried with it body aches and fatigue. The worst part was never knowing when it was going to be over, because every day would be the same thing, and every afternoon I would think it was subsiding, only to see it return in the evening. It lasted for 10 days and actually took a toll on the budding relationship. I actually wish it had dragged a little longer, as the relationship survived, became long term (17 months), and was frankly the worst one I ever had.
Fifteen years later, I came down with a bad sore throat. My girlfriend had strep throat, so I was sure that was what I had, as well. But it wasn't, and I started noticing a familiar pattern. Bad sore throat in the morning, moderating in the afternoon, and bad in the evening again. Body aches. Fatigue. Congestion otherwise minor, without the runny nose or coughing. It was 1999 all over again, but without the terrible girlfriend.
I thought about radio. Remembering it took 10 days to dissipate in 1999, I knew that radio for Tuesday 11/4 might be a no-go, even though I had already missed the prior week with the same problem. Indeed, true to form, I can feel the sore throat on its way out, as it's 90% gone today and likely 100% by tomorrow (the 10th day).
As talking for 3-4 hours straight isn't the best thing to do with ANY sign of throat problems, I will give it one more day and likely be able to do radio normally tomorrow at 6:30pm PST.
It's actually amazing how similar this cold was to the one I had in 1999, and it's only the second time in my life this has happened. At least I knew what to expect this time.
Somehow Benjamin dodged BOTH the strep throat and this. Honestly I'm glad I dodged the strep throat, despite living in the same place as someone who had it.
