I entered my bets in the Action Network app so I could track through the day. Nice. No way I was gonna remember what I bet.


So I’m in the supermarket checkout line and Simpdog’s Premium Service sends me Pittsburgh Penguins -200. It’s an autobet so I enter the bet while I’m holding the okra.

I see they won, of course, and I look for the winning graded wager just now. I look and I look. WTF. I must have forgotten to acknowledge the final screen or something.

I’m so tilted.

Yesterday was super frustrating. Starts off great with an easy win on Orlando and then the Golden State under eventually looks like a lock to cover. Then OT screws me, and I'm 1-1. Then the Brooklyn game runs behind, catches up, has a bad 4th, and misses covering by 4.5. Then Lakers game just has low scoring the whole way.

So what looked like 2-0 with two to go ends up as 1-3.

Austria for a day trip. Beautiful country.

My wife and I sat next to Eddie A one night at Kowloon. Probably a dozen guys walked by and said “Hi I’m a fan” and he took it in stride.

In 1969 a lawyer, a real estate guy and an accountant are in a Boston bar. Apparently they were hysterical. A radio executive heard them arguing sports and gave them a slot on Sunday evenings 7-11pm. Once a week. The only regularly scheduled sports talk on the radio. Not only in Boston but in the country.

It was local. It had a culture of inside jokes. Prank calls. They skewered the local players and teams. Especially the woeful Red Sox and Patriots. There was nothing like it in the country. The lack of respect for the Boston teams and players that were typically worshiped by everyone else appealed to this kid.

Once a week in the worst time slot decades later became daily. It was the birth of sports talk.

Local callers had an outlet for venting a 100 years of Red Sox frustration. It was fantastic.

Later, when internet radio was available I would tune in to other cities. You’d get great insights. I especially loved tuning in to a city like Detroit after a playoff loss. Im a glutton for schadenfreude.

Now homogenous inexpensive syndicated ESPN is all that’s around. I almost never listen to sports talk anymore.

I witnessed the birth and death of sports talk.

Sports talk would have been created as a genre eventually with or without Andelmann but he was first.

Eddie Andelmann loved Chinese food because, well, he was an East Coast Jew. He used to plug the Kowloon without sponsorship. Auerbach was known to frequent the joint too. I remember the day I finally made a pilgrimage and got my pu pu platter.

The Hot Dog Safari was a charity fund raiser that blew up beyond Andelmann’s expectations. Unfortunately it has become his legacy - not the invention of sports talk.

I have always thought worshipping your own local sports heroes was unsophisticated and a character flaw as a result of the Sports Huddle at an impressionable age. Now we call it “fading the public” or sharp. Now we have Kershaw trashing.
