    Phantom, Is This True?

Pig in Australia Steals 18 Beers from Campers, Gets Drunk, Fights Cow

Forget crocodiles and snakes, the real animal threat in Australia is wild pigs. At least if you’re camping.

At a campground in Western Australia over the weekend, a feral pig guzzled down 18 beers that had been left out improperly secured. And just like anyone 18 beers in at a rural dive bar, the pig got big-headed and decided to start a fight with a cow, resulting in the cow chasing the pig around a car.

“In the middle of the night these people camping opposite us heard a noise, so they got their torch out and shone it on the pig and there he was, scrunching away at their cans,” said a visitor.

The pig was later reported sleeping his hangover (and shame of trying to take down a cow?) off under a tree.

While feral pigs are considered an invasive pest in many parts of the country, it’s also a reminder to keep food and drink secured when camping. Just imagine if it had been a drunk kangaroo.

Feral pig pinches multiple six-packs of beer and runs riot at Pilbara camp sites

A booze-stealing feral pig that is wreaking havoc in the Pilbara has prompted a reminder for travellers at camp sites and rest stops to ensure their food and alcohol is secured.

It is believed the animal has drunk up to 18 cans of beer at the DeGrey River rest area, east of Port Hedland, over the past few days.

Fionna Findley from Main Roads says the animal has caused a nuisance, ransacking bin bags left in the area by clean-up crews.

"They bundled up the rubbish in liners and then they attend to other rest areas nearby, and when they returned it was all ripped apart," Ms Findley said.

"And when they were talking to some of the road users that were parked over for the night, I think they were camping actually, they said the pig stole their beers, drank them and then afterwards proceeded to tear apart the bin liners.

"We just want to remind everyone when you do pull over, make sure [your food and alcohol] is securely stored because there are a lot of animals out there that are keen for a free feed."

One camper named Merida recounted the tale told to her by fellow campers.

"It was in the middle of the night and it was these people camping opposite us and they heard this crunching of the can and they got their torch out and shone it on the pig and there he was scrunching away at their cans," Merida said.

"Then he went and raided their rubbish that they had sort of covered over with a bin as well.

"And then there was some other people camped right on the river and they saw him running around their vehicle being chased by a cow.

"It was going around and around and then it went into the river and swam across to the middle of the river.

"The people that were camped on the river went across and crept up on it and it was hiding and sleeping under a big log right on the edge of the water.

"It was sort of coming from there for a couple of days but we didn't see it this morning or last night."
    Search continues for drunken thief

It was initially thought the pig stole just a six-pack, but Merida is certain it was a lot more.

"It wasn't six cans, it was about 18 I believe it crunched."

Main Roads is trying to locate the animal.

"It was last seen near the river itself, under a tree," Ms Findley said. "I think it's nursing its head today.

"Our guys aren't equipped to contain or control these wild animals, especially under the influence.

"The guys who attended the scene said they had a chat to the guys and they were more upset the pig stole their beer."

    Very sad ending...

Swino, the Beer-Stealing, Cow-Fighting Australian Pig, Is Dead

Swino the feral pig was a happy drunk. An Australian boar who roamed free among the Pillbara wilds, he managed to live an undetected hobo's existence for years, sleeping under the stars and feasting on strangers' trash until one fateful evening, when Swino embarked on a bender few men could match. In one night, the hog stole 18 beers, rumbled with a cow, and swam a glorious victory lap in a nearby river, all for the benefit of bemused spectators.

And now, true to his live-fast/die-young lifestyle, Swino is dead.

Swino briefly became an international celebrity last month, when he spent the second weekend of September terrorizing campers stationed by the DeGrey River rest area, east of Port Hedland, along Australia's Western Coast.

The Australia Broadcasting Corporation reported that late one night, the animal woke a group of sleeping campers while ravaging their booze supply. "They got their torch out and shone it on the pig and there he was scrunching away at their cans," a camper named Merida told the ABC. In total, Swino got into 18 beers. And that wasn't all he did. "Then there was some other people camped right on the river and they saw him running around their vehicle being chased by a cow," Merida continued. "It was going around and around and then it went into the river and swam across to the middle of the river."

    Then Swino disappeared.

Road-works government employee Fionna Findley suspected the pig was just hungover. "It was last seen near the river itself, under a tree," Findley said. "I think it's nursing its head today." (A photo of his damage is here.)

Unfortunately, the next time Swino emerged publicly was a month later, as roadkill. Findley says that a crew found the boar about one kilometer north of the site of his rest-area rampage. The government workers were able to confirm that the body belonged to Swino because of the distinct markings on his ears.

Rest in peace, Swino. May you have all the beer and cow chases you wish in piggy heaven.

    But wait...

Swino the pig may leave legacy

The life of Swino the famous "wino" pig has been tragically cut short but the famous hog's legacy may live on.

The beer-swilling beast, which made headlines around the world, was mowed down by a truck a mere 1km from the safety of his private island sanctuary at the De Grey River Campsite.

Main Roads customer service manager Fionna Findley said the maintenance department found pig remains on the side of the Great Northern Highway with "Swino-like" distinctive markings.

"They found an ear and other stuff and they sort of matched it with the photo and they thought it was him," she said.

"He was definitely hit by a truck. If it was a car we would have known because they are at a good height to get your radiator."

When asked what she thought tempted the porcine predator away from his nesting place Ms Findley said: "The fame just got to his head and he partied too hard."

But those feeling miserable about the reign of the Pilbara's most famous hog being over need not despair.

Ms Findley reckons there's a fair chance the boorish beast fathered some offspring before he met his demise.

"It's not the end," she said.

"To be continued ... we might just see a Swino the second in the future."
