"Beastie Boys" rapper MCA real name Adam Yauch has died.

In 2009, MCA announced he was being treated for a cancerous parotid gland and a lymph node. He has since undergone surgery and radiation therapy.

So far, it's not clear if the death is related to the rapper's battle with cancer.

Russell Simmons' website GlobalGrind.com first reported the death. We have spoken to people independently connected to the rapper who also say he is dead.

Yauch co-founded Beastie Boys in 1979 with Mike D, Mix Master Mike, and Ad Roc. The group has won multiple Grammys.

Yauch became a vegan at the recommendation of his Tibetan doctors.

Yauch is survived by his wife and daughter. He was 47.

Sad. Saw them the first time when they were opening for Madonna when I was like 13. The embarrassing part, I was there to see Madonna, and didn't know who they were when they came out. Saw them many times later. Getting old sucks; icons seem to drop every day.

Reading these tweets made me cry like a baby. He had an incredible life and was loved and respected by everyone who knew him and millions like me who never did. He skateboarded past me once in NYC. I will never forget that.

When Adam was sick he had met with his holiness on several occasions. The last time was in July of last year in Washington D.C. and his holiness blessed him and advised that lead a life of helping others and now he should be aware and face his challenges courageously.
