He and I didn't exactly get along, so I can only guess.
If you remember, he was in Alaska for awhile playing in underground 2-5 games there, and was married with two kids. He and the wife divorced at some point, and somehow he got full custody despite his known drinking issues. I'm guessing the wife had either a major drug problem, major psychological issues, or both. What was even more amazing was that he was allowed to leave the state with the kids, which is highly unusual in child custody situations. Apparently she either wasn't allowed visitation, or the court ruled that it was okay for him to move thousands of miles away with the kids.
I'm guessing he was sick of Alaska, and also wanted to get far away from the crazy ex. I'm not sure why he chose Texas. He was originally from Guelph, Ontario, Canada. By all accounts he was a good father and really loved those two kids. I feel bad for them not just for losing their father, but also for ending back up with that mom, who wasn't considered fit by the court to have any custody. I saw Gavin at the WSOP not too long before he died, and he was still drinking heavily. Supposedly his death was unrelated to the drinking -- some kind of hereditary health issue -- but I have to imagine that the lifestyle may have worsened things.
