    Pros and Cons re: Mexico

Coming up on 4 months now since I crossed the border into Mexico, and I wanted to give an honest review and outline some of the pros and cons of relocating here.

I will say first off that I am GLAD I made the move down here for better or worse. I feel more relaxed and at peace with my life than I have for years. The moment I drove across the border, I felt this tangible mood shift and air of relief

This is not my first rodeo being overseas, but I'd never been to Mexico...and wanted to relocate to a better climate, and of course to get back on Stars again. Oregon sucked ass and it seemed like a good move. I've been 'mobile' for most of my adult life, and love traveling. Admittedly I had a few reservations about coming here, but life is pretty fucking short and I felt compelled to make a bold move

I will say that some of the stigmas's attached to Mexico are spot on...but others not so much. I've never felt safer in my life. Nobody fucks with gringos. If you don't go looking for trouble or getting into situations, it's just fine. If you aren't out clubbing and getting wasted and banging hookers...it's relatively passive. I haven't felt threatened a single time since I've been here. I pretty much stay to myself and came here to enjoy some good weather and the beach and to be left the fuck alone.

    With that said...

    THE PROS

    1. The first pro that comes to mind moving here was not having to deal with scumbag prick cops trying to ruin my life. The police in Mexico are not lurking behind a tree waiting to bust some poor sap with no current registration etc. They are too preoccupied with actual crime (i.e. the cartels) than to fuck with people who are just trying to eek out a living. I love that aspect of Mexico. The police state in the United States is out of control.

    2. Very family oriented culture. Sundays here basically everything shuts down for church. The kids go to schools where they still wear uniforms. (I love that) The people here may be poor, but they are genuinely happy. Of course there are plenty of degens, but I think overall...Mexicans are good people who cherish old school values, which is something sadly lacking in recent American culture.

    3. The food is off the hook. Granted there is no shortage of roadside taqueria's, but with a little detective work, I've managed to hook up with some of the best food I've ever eaten in my life. Druff mentioned that he wasn't impressed with Ensenada and the 'blowhole'...(its called La Bufadora) which is most def a huge tourist trap. There are typically 5 different cruise ships that stop in Ensenada weekly....but if I may....wow....there is this little stand on the walkway that serves these giant fresh barbecued clams topped with crusted cheese and cilantro and minced shrimp. two words: holy shit. 100 pesos (about 8 bucks) for 3 of them. all day long

    4. the weather obviously. I'm on the beach now pretty much every day and feel very healthy and happy. The sun here is out all the time, and the coastal breeze keeps it tolerable. It's usually about mid 70's to low 80's and the beach where I live is nice and clean and the water crystal clear. I lost my beer gut and have a nice healthy looking tan...not this pasty grayish hue like I had living in Fuckbag, Oregon. There is a lot to be said for the healing power of the sun

    5. the women. needless to say I love (and prefer) Latina women. still shopping for a nice senorita. not really into banging hookers for 300 pesos...that doesn't interest me...But there is definitely no shortage of amazing looking dark haired goddesses in Mexico. I think in the very near future I will be connected with a sexy mamacita

    6. obv PokerStars

    THE CONS

    1. Not impressed with available merchandise on a retail level. The Walmart here is a joke. Overall product quality is pathetic. Good luck buying decent electronics here. welcome to the 3rd world. I hate going shopping for food because I have no idea wtf I'm buying since the labels are in Mexican pig-latin

    2. most of the roads suck. On the main coastal freeway it's actually in good shape....nice new smooth asphalt...but around town (Rosarito and Ensenada both) there are these insane potholes and all the side roads are dirty and chalked full of rocks and basically awful in general

    3. the water. yes everything they say about Mexican water is true. people here are religious about their bottled water for good reason. The tap and shower water in Ensenada is actually diluted salt water.

    4. No In & Out Burger. huge con. (although I did find a KFC here in Ensenada which was a huge bonus) impossible to find a decent cheeseburger which really sucks. no decent pizza anywhere either....ughhhh

It's been a huge trade off from various creature comforts I've grown accustomed to, but all in all I'm really glad I made the move down here

    will respond to questions

    A few comments:

    1) Regarding Ensenada: I was there 5 years ago. You mentioned a food place "on the walkway" which serves cheap and good food. Which walkway? I hope you don't mean that super-tourist-trap area right off the cruise ship terminals, because that place was awful and overpriced. I laughed at how everything was priced in US dollars -- a sure sign you are getting gouged. I did walk around the town and got away from the tourist areas, but didn't see much that impressed me.

    2) Regarding the weather: It is essentially identical to San Diego. San Diego weather is great, but it's also not tropical and it does have a winter. Puerto Vallarta averages a high of 83-88 degrees year round (though it is also quite humid, which can get unpleasant.) Starting in December in Ensenada, you will rarely see 70 degrees for about 4 months, and you will see 40s at night. The water will also be too cold to swim.

    3) I believe you that you can probably get a lot of good food for cheap, if you know where to go.

ridiculous tourist trap 100% Druff's read is correct

about 1/4 mile of tiny shops with shirts, hats, etc.

I went there 2 weeks ago with one of my neighbors...longer drive than I expected around the tip outside of Ensenada

amazing drive. steep cliffs (no guard rails obv)

Congrats for moving out of Rosarito. As far as I know it is the place where expats without immagination and any real desire to get to know Mexico a bit deeper go. Not exactly sure how it is Ensenada.

Admittedly Chiang Mai is also influenced by westerners to some degree, but I never understand people who come to another country to live in the most touristy areas for a long time.

A bit surprised you cant get decent burgers or pizza where you are, ate some of the better homemade burgers and delicious pizza here.
And IMO it is not a good testimonial for the food if you are happy about KFC. It is everywhere here but I would never put a foot inside.

And come on, how about picking up some of that 'Mexican pig-latin'?
Even I can read the most of the menus here and it looks like this
    ข้าวซอยหมู

Guessing its not the kind of place you'd feel comfortable playing in a home game....

In general I agree that it is best to GTFO immediately from touristy areas -- not just in foreign countries, but in domestic tourist destinations, as well.

Sometimes you have no choice. For example, National Parks are visited by tons of tourists, but if you "get away" from them, you will be missing some of the parks' best features.

Or perhaps the tourist trap is the destination itself, such as Disneyland.

However, in other cases, I try to get away from the touristy areas (and the tourists), and find both hidden/uncrowded local spots and eat at locals restaurants.

On my recent cruise to Alaska, we had port stops in Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway -- all huge tourist traps. Each time we would get off the ship, I would rent a car, and we would drive away from the tourists and spend most of the day in spots which are mostly ignored or not known by the tourists.

That is one reason I like National Parks, because tourist-trap shops and restaurants generally aren't allowed to set up shop within park borders.

BTW pavoe, I haven't been to Thailand in over 20 years, but I was there twice in the late '80s and early '90s, and both times I made an effort to go off the beaten path. Never made it to Chang Mai though.

Its a company that helps you get setup with everything you need to get back to grinding when you leave the country.

I know no details about Poker Refugees, but to me it looked like a company that capitalizes on idiotic young poker players who need their hand held for everything besides poker.

I can't see how a company like that could stay in business unless they are referring you to overpriced places that give them kickbacks.

In general I always prefer to arrange things on my own, with little help from outsiders.

Of course not. Why would somebody of your wealth and status worry about the money?

Go to Puerto Vallarta. At the casino in Nuevo Vallarta, which is just across the state line in Nayarit, they have those digital poker tables like we played at the excalibur! I won at least 2000 pesos every time I played there, and the tables were micro stakes, and my sessions were always less than a few hours. Mexicans suck ass at poker.

literally the MOMENT you cross the border, the bustling metropolis of Tijuana radiates this terrible and inescapable STENCH of turds and raw sewage

which, if I may add...was slightly discomforting

Rosarito is about 25 miles from the U.S. border

Ensenada is another 60 miles south or so
