Kinda makes sense when you think that the NHL does need another team or 2 in the West.
I would suspect that they don't expand but instead move from an underperforming market in the East(Florida) to balance it out & give Vegas a shot if it happens at all.

No shit? I'm not a hockey fan but I would go to several games a year just to support a pro sports team.
I don't understand the whole "we can't put a team in Vegas because of gambling" thing. This is based on two very odd assumptions- that the only people in America with interest in fixing games live in Vegas, and these people cannot leave Vegas or contact anyone outside of Vegas.
And just like that the NHL shoots it down.
So basically Howard Bloom is a jackass....The commissioner and I had other business this morning, so we talked for a while and this came up, he told the station. And I asked him, did I miss a meeting?' And he laughed and said, no.'
What I can tell you, 100 percent, as of this morning, for sure? This isn't on the agenda right now, Leiweke told The Fan.
http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-...-anywhere-elseWhen Howard Bloom of SportsBusinessNews.com issued another report that cited expansion to Quebec City, Toronto, Seattle and Vegas by 2017, it was a full on explosion of conversations among hockey pundits, media and fans.
Up until this year the ECHL (Hockey minor league AA level) had a team in Las Vegas (Wranglers)who played at the Orleans Arena for last 11 years. The team isn't playing this year apparently due to lack of a place to play but its slated to return to play in 2015-16. However, if this NHL to LV is going to happen I have to wonder if this will affect the minor league team or not. There's been rumors of plans for a huge nearly 20k seat arena on the strip (near MGM) being planned (est opening 2016) which would be home to said NHL franchise and a potential NBA team as well.
As for it being shot down. Theres obviously some possible smoke theres fire as NESN reported less then 2 hrs ago this was still very much viable.
As for the whole concern of games being thrown and such. If the Wranglers and 51s both have been free of any such issues or accusations then I don't see why its any more likely at the major league sports level. A bet on a sporting event is a bet on an event period. And if anything it would be much easier to collude and cheat on a minor league sporting event then major league as any weird betting pattern would be even easier to pick up.

I don't believe this story about an expansion team to Vegas to be true but is this the say Tim Leiweke that categorically denied he was leaving MLSE less than 1.5 years into a 5 year contract & then announced the very next day that he was leaving after all? What I can tell you, 100 percent, as of this morning, for sure? Not exactly the guy I'd be quoting to prove something was false.
