ISIS says that the murder is payback for recent airstrikes, but the guy was kidnapped in 2012. The other guy they're threatening to kill was abducted a year ago. I don't know of any demands or negotiations for their release. Apparently they were just holding on to him and waiting for something that needed payback.

I'm glad that the Yazidis and the other Kurds have been helped by our airstrikes. They've been through a lot of shit in the past hundred years. But much more importantly, the airstrikes along with Kurdish and Iraqi Army soldiers, have retaken control of the Mosul Dam. It's a shittily built dam that could probably be destroyed by a couple rockets. If that had happened it would have devastated Mosul, Tikrit, and done major damage all the way down to Baghdad. The US Embassy (formerly the Green Zone) is right on the Tigris and could have been completely flooded.
