What would your roll have to be- cash version

So I was wondering how people approach cash game sessions? Mainly how many buy ins do you normally take (or limit yourself to with stop loss), and what are your realistic and unrealistic expectations? I will clarify a bit. If you are a completely recreational player and just going out for a long session on Friday night, what are the outcomes you expect? If you sit down at $2/5 how many buy ins do you bring? What is a realistic goal? Are you trying to win 20bb, 100bb, 500bb? What is a realistic goal and then what is the best night anyone has had from a bb perspective?

This only came up because my "buddy" played a cash game on Wednesday after work. $1/2 and in 2.5 hours he profited $1100. 550bb seems silly to me in that type of setting.
It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

Your buddy is likely a fish that ran good. Its not uncommon to see fish at 1/2 with 3k stacks.

So only bad players win big at cash games? Hmmm, I was unaware of that one

I never said that, but winning 550 bbs in 2.5 hrs with the fact that 99% of live players suck and it sounds like hes a rec player. Id be willing to wager hes pretty bad.

Do recreational players think in terms of buy ins won? I never have.

If I go to the local casino to play 1-2 no limit with a 200 buy in, I'll probably have 400 on me. I do have an ATM card, though. I think 200 profit is a good night. If there is a bunch of faggots with headphones and hoodies playing 1-2 and hollywooding, I usually just spill my drink all over the table and go play Pai Gow.

This was more what i was looking for! So two bullets and winning a buy in is a decent night? I would probably agree with that assesment

1 night expectations are kind of dumb because 1 night means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

I lost a lot of information when my poker journal app fucked up an update, but I think my worst live downswing was 6 BIs. Way different than online. I always have a lot more on me because the games range anywhere from 1/3 to 5/10, and the 2/5 is rather deep as they allow you to cover biggest stack at table when buying in, but for a live 1/3 session, even a 3 BI downswing on a given day is rare unless you spew. It happens, but you're better off calling it a day then anyways. I haven't had many 5 BI wins in 2.5 hours though. That's even rarer than a 3 BI downswing.

I like to have 3 BI's($750-900) with me for the 3-5NL game I occasionally play in. It's a wild game & if you can get some cards a +2K night isn't hard to do.

The last 6 times I've played it:

    -10
    +600
    +125
    -80
    +1200
    -500

The last one I had to walk away after 2 BI's because of tilt. I was +500 at one point in that game.

Depends on what you're playing imo.

Limit Omaha 8, 2 full buy-ins is plenty.

No Limit I would bring 3 bullets and make sure I had access to 2-3 more if the game is really good but I'm running bad. If I was a complete recreational player I would just bring what I'm comfortable losing

I've never thought in terms of what I'm happy winning or what I'm trying to win, I just try to play my best and the results are what they are. Realistically I think you can expect to win 5 buy-ins from time to time, on rare occasions you can win more but you shouldn't go into the game expecting to win any amount, that will just F with your head while you're playing.
