Moving two cars across country - anyone have experience?

PFA seems to be god for these sort of random things. Need to transport two cars across country from Oregon to New York. I want both cars to be in enclosed containers. Anyone done anything like this before? Any recommendations? Getting quotes for around 1500 per car but that seems high.

Open air cost me about $900 from NY to Oregon.

Factor in closed container and seasonal offset, $1500 a pop sounds close to the mark.

Haven't done it in a long time, but make sure the company you are getting is reputable.

I had a car moved about 2000 miles about 15 years ago, and the company damaged it. It wasn't an expensive car, but the body damage cost about $700 to fix.

When I called the company, they tried to pass the buck to the third-party company they had hired to actually deliver it (even though they didn't tell me they were hiring a third party when I booked it). I called the third party company, and they LOL'd at me, denying everything. The third party company also had no insurance. However, the original company DID have insurance, and after some arguing, they backed down and sent me a check for the $700. It was clearly damaged from the move, because I carefully inspected it before letting them take it.

I don't remember what I paid, but it was also 15 years ago, so that wouldn't really be relevant to today anyway.

What I'm trying to say is that you should ask:

    1) Do they have insurance, and who insures them?

    2) Will they be performing the move, or will they be hiring a third-party company to do it? If it's a third-party, who will take responsibility if damage occurs?

Call that company from the TV show "shipping wars" & try to get the move on TV.

Maybe Roy will do it for you.

The subcontracting to third parties deal is insanely standard.

$1500 is a fair price for what you're asking. I just quoted to move one Jeep Wrangler from Yuma AZ to Minnesota at $1k and that's on an open rig. I'd say if the company has good reviews (on time and no damage), take the $1500 quote and run. If the rig shows up and he's greasy as fuck and his tractor is dripping oil all over the road, take a pass.

A few years ago I hauled a baseball player's truck from Seattle to Minnesota, we charged him $2k.

Also, it's completely standard in the industry to broker loads. In other words, the company you hire may or may not be the company that hauls. Again, completely standard, and it is what it is. If you think about the logistical nature of hauling stuff, with the thousands of points of origin and destination, the odds of any one company having a truck sitting at your point of origin on the day you need it is astronomical. With enclosed (white glove) service, this may be different, but with the regular car haulers, it's 100% standard. Make sure you get a copy of the pre-load damage report, keep it safe, and THOROUGHLY check it over on the other end. For added protection, take SEVERAL date & time stamped pics on the loading end with the truck in view if possible. This way if there is damage in transit, you'll have proof.

I would love to drive one but doubt it would save you much money. I drive from Indiana to Arizona once every couple years and enjoy driving.

I think you had talked about this issue once before

are you moving to NYC or just somewhere else in the state of NY? - noose me if you clarified somewhere already because I just skimmed the thread. I have never been to NY period but everything I have heard about the city (including on this site) points to having 2 vehicles being a huge pain in the ass sometimes

I was just kind of curious. Good luck on your move btw
