    Overdue Trip Report

I have been so busy (read spoiler tag below for more info on why I have been MIA) that I haven't really been able to write-up my trip report to the WSOP in June.

    For the tl;dr crowd....Went to Vegas....Made Money

    WSOP Background:

I had originally planned to go to Vegas twice this summer to try and hit up all the PLO8 tournaments. For the first time in my life I was properly bank rolled to play multiple tournaments and I know I have a really strong edge in PLO8. Basing a lot of my plans on the 2013 schedule and knowing that these tournaments would probably be divided up over two weeks I arranged my life to when I thought the PLO8 tournaments would be.

When the 2014 schedule was announced they had moved the tournaments from the weeks that they were played previously and I was left in a pickle to try and re-arrange things. Ultimately it left me unable to play any PLO8 events and I decided to go and play the $1500 HORSE on June 12th. Knowing I still had an edge in this format and figured by 2015 my life would allow me to be more flexible and play more tournaments, I conceded to the fact that I was only going to get to play one tournament.

Getting to and Arriving in Vegas:

I flew Southwest to Vegas. I actually always fly Southwest (much to Druff's disgust as he is no fan of LUV). Now things that some people dislike about Southwest, like no assigned seating, I can use to my advantage as I know where the best seats on their planes are at and usually am one of the first 15-20 people on the plane so I get a premium seat most of the time I fly. I also like that I am not crammed into tiny planes all the time with them and their flight attendants seem to be genuinely happy people unlike most airlines. The only setback is they are never on time after the first flight in the morning....and I mean ever!

I get to Vegas with no real problems and grab my bag and go to the taxi stand. Now some of you may know about tunneling in Vegas and the rest of you are just suckers. I was staying at Bally's and I get in the taxi and immediately say “Bally's no tunnel”. The guy immediately starts protesting with me about how the tunnel is faster and blah blah blah (it isn't faster especially when staying at Bally's). I responded with, “you are getting paid the same either way but if you tunnel me you just have to split the fare with the cab company instead of keeping the tip.” Quickly the protesting stopped and off to Flamingo Road we went.

I arrived to Bally's at about Noon which is a few hours ahead of check-in. There was basically nobody in the check-in line. I stroll up and go straight to my usual upgrade process. Cheery greeting followed by automatically handing the person my ID, Credit Card and $20 and ask, “are there any complimentary upgrades?” The lady goes to work and I move from my comped Bally's standard room to the newly remodeled Jubilee Rooms which is fine since I basically won't be in the room. The other advantage to the $20 trick is they will almost always let you check-in early which is nice considering I wasn't going to go to Rio, then back to Bally's to get my luggage from the Bell Hop, and then back to my room. I get to my room, take a shower, walk down to PH to go to Earl of Sandwich and then head to the Rio.

How to not play a WSOP event:

Now I had been eying the Bravo Poker Live app for awhile to see what games had been running. I had been dying to get into the 5/5 Big O 8 game. There is almost no where in the country you can get into a good sized PLO8 game. Most casinos if they run PLO8 will run it at 1 / 2 and that just isn't really worth time or effort to travel to. My plan at the Rio was to register first for the HORSE event the next day and then go play cash games. I couldn't help myself and went straight to find that Big O 8 game. I got my name on the list and then proceeded to get into the game about 60 seconds after getting my name on the list, as two people got up from it to go play large mixed games.

What I would learn over the coming hours is that a lot of the larger mixed games and really any other larger games the players would come sit and play in the 5/5 Big O 8 game while they waited to get into their main game. This meant there was a lot....and I mean a lot of cash flowing in the game. When I sat down at the table and kind of looked through the stacks there was already well over 20k on the table. It's about 3PM and I tell myself that I need to leave by Midnight, go register and then go sleep.

3rd hand after I sat down, I am in a 3 way pot with (AA23K), with current nut low on the flop (A,5,7) and trip aces. Turn brings a 9 and I check attempting to come over the top and somehow it goes Check, Check behind me. I am pretty surprised because with all the chips on the table I assumed that I wouldn't get two check behinds on a scare card. River brings the A for Quads and then somehow we get it all in after going Check, Check on the turn ….. to my amazement. First guy has 6/8/junk for middle straight, which makes me raise my eyebrows because he didn't lead when he was ahead and then shoved over top of me when I bet the river. The only thing I can think is he thought I was bluffing a full house because I checked the turn but for God sake like every card in the deck is in play. Then the third guy shows 3 / 4/ Junk for second low. Now I am raking a $1600 plus pot and just loling to myself that I am never leaving this table if it is going to be like this.

Fast forward to about Midnight and I am sitting on about 5k. As players are busting from the tournament they start coming over to play cash and the game has a steady flow of new blood. At this point I start rationalizing to myself. Well if I stay till 2AM I still have plenty of time to get sleep. Then it is if I stay till 4AM I have plenty of time to get sleep. Then it is I can late register the tournament. At about 6AM the game starts to get short handed, and by 7:30 it breaks. I have about $6,400 (down from a high of like 7k). I had been in the game now for over 14 hours. I used to play a lot of 24 hour sessions but being a grown up now means I haven't done that in quite some time. I contemplated for a minute registering and then getting like 5 hours of sleep and coming back late and playing the HORSE. Knowing I hadn't played a lot of long sessions and not two back to back long sessions in a real long time, I thought better of it. This ended up being a good decision because I went back to my room and slept for like 10 hours straight. I usually only sleep about 6 hours so I was wiped out. When I woke up I was a tad disappointed that I didn't play the tournament but then I realized that the probability of netting almost 6k from the HORSE tournament was very unlikely and that I shouldn't be bitching to myself.

What to do in Vegas when not playing in the WSOP:

By the time I wake up and am ready to present myself to the world. It is now 8PM on Thursday. I know my sleep schedule is now fucked and I know I need to earn off my comp room if I want to get more comps in the future. So I decide that I am going to stay awake until at least 8PM on Friday to get my sleep schedule back in order.

First stop, Bally's Craps table. Now I only usually play Craps at Casino Royale on the strip because I am not a big fan of 3x-4x-5x Craps, but knowing that if the table got hot my average bet could get up into a range that a 4 hour session would earn my room theo and I could be free to go play good blackjack at an MGM property. If not my backup plan was to play $20 a hand Ultimate Texas Hold'em. Which should generate about $120 an hour in theo because it is massively over comped due to the general terrible play of the players. Craps table ended up being hit and miss, had to go into my pocket once but ended up walking out less than $50 down. Never really got a chance to press up over 3 bets though which meant I would still have some work to do at Caesar's properties in order to continue to receive room comps.

It is starting to get later into the evening, maybe around Midnight, and I head over to the B in hopes that their Double Deck game is at $50 since it was a Thursday and starting to get late. There was a table that was $50 and I jumped in. The reason I elected the Double Deck game over the Six Deck game was I have been using KO counting for awhile now but I often use it in my local casino that is fairly dead. I didn't want to lose a count in the middle of the deck and be semi-trapped for 2+ decks. Game went well and I left a few hundred up.

In the morning I ate and then proceeded to go play some Craps at Casino Royale and then finally back to Bally's for some Ultimate Texas Hold'em. I ended up crashing around 8:30 on Friday evening.

Saturday I hung out at the pool, played a little bit more Ultimate Texas Hold'em and Casino Royale Craps and went out and ate a nice steak dinner.

Sunday I flew home, I ended up about $6800 for the trip almost entirely because of the first night and skipping the WSOP event. I should have earned enough theo that I should get Comps at Caesar's now and should be able to get Suite comps at Bally's or PH next time. Also because of my BJ play at the B I might get comped at some place like The Mirage, which I haven't stayed at and would consider possibly doing next time.

Why the fuck have I been gone?

So last year I decided to start a business with the wife that she is primarily running. That has ended up in a lot of long hours but this year we should net over 50k from it and the following year close to 100k from it. I have been continuing to work my regular job through this and so I have had a lot of 12 hour days. As a result of starting the original business I actually found a need for a second business. Like an idiot instead of waiting for the first business to take off to the point I could get my hands off of it, I just went ahead and started the second business. So now I have been working 12-16 hour days, 7 days a week. The second business has income potential of well over 100k a year by me only working about 4 hours a day. So the goal is by sometime in 2015 I will no longer be working for the “man.”

I still want to do radio, I actually have every show written out and I may just pick a Saturday or Sunday and marathon them all into one, 12 hour radio show, and be done with it. Otherwise I just will need my life to get a bit more sane and I should be back posting and hopefully can do some radio stuff.

Havent read it all but I have to comment on Southwest. All you have to do is get the app on your phone then check in 24 hrs before your flight and thats the boarding spot you get, so you can show up 10 mins before your flight and still board before most people. Just do it exactly 24 hours. Just spent 2 weeks in FL flew SW and had no issues with seating at all. They did delay my flight back but they found another plane and had us flying out an hr later. Ok back to the read.

    Rock solid.

I've never had a cabbie backtalk to me when I say no tunnel. Typically, the sand-swoog just nods and we're off.

I have had a few different experiences.

I have been tunneled when I didn't know better.
I have had the "I never take the tunnel."
I have had the nod and away we go.
I have had the "but there is construction".
I have had a guy preempt me and go, "do you want to go the fast way or not." Which I responded, "not if the fast way involves the tunnel."
Then I had this guy who tried to argue with me.

I must look like a sucker compared to you devidee.

I was hyper focused on playing and didn't want distractions....I am easily convinced of shenanigans after a couple drinks.

I am going back in October though so maybe I will see if Druff and/or Drexel will be around then.

It was a lot of action, nits would get ran over. You rarely made it to a flop with less than 50 committed.
