LOL @ Jose Canseco playing a Stratosphere satellite

He's playing for a $4,000 guaranteed package to the PPC Aruba. $330 buyin.

    Sad.

Also he is wearing his own jersey so you know who he is.

Maybe he was just having a good time. And you of all people should know that if you can pay less to get something you'd be a fool not to try.

Plus I'm sure he made quite a few people's day.

    Also, it could be Ozzie.

Actually I think satellites are torture and not fun at all. I always saw them as a way to either get entry to tournies you can't afford, or where the buyin is just very high. The thought of a baseball player playing a satellite for a $4k event just seems sad to me.

Like if Jose was just entering a regular $330, that would be okay, as there is fun/prestige in winning a tournament like that. But a satellite? That's a different story.

It just seems odd to be that you'd equate being a famous sports player with being a good poker player.
When faced with a difficult decision, ask yourself "What would Micon do?", then do the opposite.

    2012: The Templar (unknown)
    2013: Jasep $5000+

I think he's more equating it to Jose not being well off financially. Which I don't know why Druff thinks that's big news.

The real question is Druff why were you at the Stratosphere? OR why did you jack someone's picture without providing a link back.

Druff you missed a stellar opportunity to have him come here and put up a BAP. Signed merch for any contributors. Would be win/win.

Being able or willing to throw away $330 just for fun & entertainment doesn't strike me as sad. Z-donk has the right read - Canseco is hardly the poker rounder.

Tournaments are lotteries and he bought a ticket.

Sometimes the money you don't lose is money won.

Yeah, he filed Chapt 7 and last year dodged a Vegas rape charge. He's not been running good. But I give him credit for not hiding from the public. He's been consistently open & candid about his life - to the point of perhaps betraying the privacy of former team mates etc - the whole "Juiced" book.

Canseco changed the game for the better as a result. Doesn't get enough credit IMO.

He doesn't rate inclusion in the pantheon of sports scumbags but doesn't rate sympathy either. He ain't looking for any.

If your looking for someone willing to accept your pity stop by and see Pete Rose at Mandalay Place.

Indians should sign him. They have been 1 hit two games in a row. Thank God they miss Kershaw or you could mark down another no hitter.

I miss the steroid era. I'd actually watch games that didn't involve my team. Baseball is so fucking boring at the moment. MLB should make Canseco the commissioner. Baseball would be fucking dead if it wasn't for huge regional cable contracts. Not a single MLB player has an endorsement deal in the top 100 athletes in the world. I'm way off topic, but after watching my Indians put me to sleep for 2nd game in a row, I miss the bash brothers monsters going yard all day. So fun. Take it down Jose. Run it up big boy.

Wearing his own jersey is sad, but it actually looks like that might be a softball jersey or something and maybe he just came from game. Defintely looks like some off the wall type of jersey

I hear ya, BCR, on the boredom thing.

I lay part of the blame on the quality of the announcers. They don't know shit about pitching - couldn't identify a splitter from a cutter or why a pitcher is likely to throw a fastball the next pitch. K zone graphic made everyone lazy.

Jon Kruk is killing me. As an in game analyst he's just plain dumb. He funny & tolerable during ESPN's Baseball Tonight. But he doesn't help anyone follow the pitcher vs hitter gamesmanship. He's just a clown.

Eckersly is god. He dares to call the pitch before it's thrown and he'll tell you why.

Big data has taken over and average hitters are getting crushed by scouting and good athletes on the mound.

Pitchers were last to get on the juice and would have soon overwhelmed hitters anyway. Kid pitchers are all 6'3"or 6'4" minimum now. If they were still juicin batters would have no shot. Obviously kids are gonna be bigger but recovery on the juice is quicker too & they can work longer in minors on their third, fourth & maybe fifth pitches between games.

Hitting Numbers Going Down, Down, Down:
Hitting each year for the last number of years have gone down tremendously. Lets look at these 2 charts in runs per game per team as well as Home Runs per game per team. These numbers reflect the average of all 30 Clubs.

    Year / Runs // HRs
    2014 / 4.17 // 0.92
    2013 / 4.17 // 0.96
    2012 / 4.32 // 1.02
    2009 / 4.61 // 1.04
    2006 / 4.86 // 1.11
    2000 / 5.14 // 1.17

Is this a major cause of concern for baseball? Do teams start to consider moving in fences more, lowering the height of outfield walls or dare I say does MLB think about lowering the mound if these numbers continue to drop rapidly?

I play a little tennis - love racquetball more but....

Babolat came up with a racquet that has a chip built into it. An accelerometer similar to the "fitbits" that everyone is wearing. (Some insurance companies are discounting employees rates if you wear a fitbit and download activity data.)

This racket has a computer chip that can help you take a long, honest look at your forehand, backhand or serve and fix it—based on empirical evidence. Where you make contact with the ball. How hard you hit it. What kind of spin you apply. How consistent you are.

    The Racquet of the Future
    http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/...34350145781454

When will similar chips be allowed to be put into baseball bats? If not wood in the pros then the bbcor bats in college. This would be the next progression in the pitcher vs hitter battle.

The whole fitbit accelerometer notion is gonna be the coaches next requirement. He will make you wear t-shirt with one sewn in. He's gonna monitor heart rate, activity level, recovery, amount of sleep. Your entire life on & off the field is gonna be analyzed.

Big data. Can't find the whole segment.. 60 Minutes Sports
    2:10 Shane Battier Miami Heat

Had a few beers, free associating and hijacking Druff's post. Standard play.

So high school and college changed the rebound rate of the metal bats - bbcor. 210-220lbs kid with metal bat was likely to kill a pitcher it was reasoned. Maybe it acted more like wood bat.

Now no one is hitting home runs in college. The College World Series lack of home runs was dramatic. Pitch to contact and watch the ball die in outfield.

College is changing the seam height next year so that they are lower and more aerodynamic. Expect more pop. More home runs & offense.. Tweaks are always being made. We will see.

Son is a pitch to contact type of kid and is going into Junior year. He better study a little harder and focus on being an accountant. ERA is gonna get hurt.

I don't know about the juiced pitchers angle sanlmar. Obviously there were guys like Clemens and Gagne who responded very well, but in general and ime, I think steroids would likely shorten a pitcher's career more often than enhance it, and I imagine that once they saw that, it would have been the last resort for career minor leaguers and guys who were disappointments more than hard throwing young studs.

It would have had a short- lived effect for certain guys, but not to the degree it did for hitters imo. It aides in recovery, but it hampers a lot of the supporting ligaments/tendons because they don't adapt as quickly as the muscle strengthens, and with that already being a major injury issue with these young hard throwers, I think any long term use would have been problematic.

I'm generally a purist about most sports, but when you lose a whole generation of achievement like baseball already did, and the record books are already filled with records from pre- segregation baseball, or periods when guys popped amphetamines like tic tags, I think at this point I'd just opt for entertainment over purist pitching and defense.

I'm not young, and I grew up playing and loving the game. When you're boring me to tears, what chance do you have with 20somethings? I don't know a 20something passionate about baseball beyond a few in baseball towns solely interested in their team, not the league. I'm totally into Seahawks/colts game even though I have no rooting interest. You couldn't pay me to watch Phillies/Dodgers. I don't even watch the WS.

I was glued to Germany/Algeria despite it being scoreless through 90 minutes. At least they're moving around. Fucking 1-0 dodgers/Indians was just typical MLB snoozer win or lose.

No shit, I don't get this thread at all.
I've heard of Bill Gates playing 3-6 limit,
More than likely he is an overall losing gambler, had time to kill and figured losing 330 in an all afternoon poker tourney instead of losing 5k in the pits was the lesser of 2 evils.

I esp don't get the part where it is worse that he is in a satellite. A sat to a 4k entry tourney.

The jersey is pathetic no matter the situation.

Agree with everyone saying Todd is way off on this one, if the man wants to play a satellite so what ?

Just because Druff doesn't get any enjoyment playing satellites doesn't mean no one else will
