    RIP Tony Gwynn

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/16/sport/...ath/index.html

    Dead at 54 from cancer.

When I read he died, I was sure it would be from a heart attack, given he has been overweight for many years.

So apparently he had cancer and never made it public.

He would have hit .400 in 1994 if not for the strike.

Pretty sure this guy didn't do roids. Never had much power, never developed muscular looking body in later career.

Interestingly, he stole 56 bases one year when he was still thin.

Blamed his cancer on years of dipping tobacco IIRC

Great, great hitter. He was as underrated as a first ballot hall of famer can be, mostly because of playing a lot of his career during the steroid era. His '94 and '97 seasons were just off the charts amazing.

When I think of the truly great hitters of the 90's I think of him, Terry Pendleton, and Brett Butler. Gwynn and Pendleton were great and taking what pitch they were given and getting a hit out of it while Butler would sit there and foul off 15 pitches per at bat to tire out pitchers before hitting a groundball single.

Not all steroid users have muscular necks and hit 60 homers.

Sets career year in HRs(17) and Doubles(49) in 1997 at the age of 37 as a fat guy.

    He almost certainly did steroids.

    Rank speculation.

You can't do steroids if you are fat (I really don't have time to explain it) and steroids mainly help power numbers, not average. You picked out a tiny blip of his career that means jack shit in that department.

He was one of the greatest pure hitters of the modern era, and I would bet my life he never took anything that made him who he was. While I think that your "typical" offensive player of that era surely used PED's, there is not one shred of evidence to suggest Gwynn did physical or otherwise.

Some players who took steroids hit 50 bombs, sure. Take Brady Anderson for example. Raphael Palmeiro was his teammate, he also did steroids. The most beneficial effect of these steroids these guys were taking was their recovery times. It's a long 162 game season...

Their teammate Cal Ripkin got by on his legendary work ethic.

His streak ended the last game of the 1998 season. The next season at the age of 38 he was having his best season since the prime of his career (before being cut short by a wrist injury), including his career high slugging percentage. 38 years old!

Cal Ripkin was a legend of work ethic. So was Tony Gwynn. McGuire and Palmeiro flew too close to the sun.

Gwynn was the national leagues version of Kirby Puckett, and they both died young.

Gwynn had salivary gland cancer, which despite what Tony believed, is not associated with tobacco use. It's a very rare form of cancer, and also what killed Adam Yauch from the Beastie Boys

In 323 ABs vs. Glavine, Smoltz, Pedro, and Maddux, Gwynn struck out 3 times. Twice to Glavine. Unreal

another fun one is that in 20 seasons, Gwynn struck out 434 times. Adam Dunn struck out 411 times in 2 seasons (2012-2013).

this one is a fucking crazy stat...

Tony Gwynn would have had to go 0-for-his-next-1,183 to get his average to fall under .300

He also played half his games in a pitcher's park (though admittedly, it affects contact hitters less).
