I get that the idiot has priors but 17 years seems ridiculous for this offense....
He should have come in guns blazing, as he would have gotten less time.

Agreed that's an extremely harsh penalty -- it sounds like his legal counsel was an idiot. "Bethea represented himself at trial."
17 years...wtf..
So by this measure what does the Borgata chip scammer get?
That seems like a long time for a casino cheat.
I've been listening to Richard Marcus on a few podcasts, he was so well known as a casino cheat, Griffin tried to entrap him.
He never even saw a courtroom. (they have a breaking vegas episode on him, w/that albino griffin agent chasing him.)
"....placing a late $505 bet at Resorts Hotel & Casino"
In fact this guy who was caught, is trying one of Marcus' moves, or at least a version of it, hence the 505 bet.
This says he placed it late, so he put a 5 on top of a 500 chip, at an angle, so the dealer can thinks he saw it before the roll, but thought they were 2 $ 5 chips.
The move this guy made famous, though was pretty ingenious.

They make a legit $ 505 bet, and if it loses, he grabs it real quick, and IF the dealer see it, he just acts drunk, and throws 2 $ 5 chips back on the table.
It is the opposite of past posting, so if they went to the cameras, it would actually prove they did make the $ 505 bet.
$ 10 to win $ 505.
