Shocking News: Student Athletes Don't Attend Class

I know nobody is shocked by this revelation but it's the first time I've seen it "confirmed" or admitted that a head coach knew all about it.

Rashad McCants, the second-leading scorer on the North Carolina basketball team that won the 2004-05 national title, told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" that tutors wrote his term papers, he rarely went to class for about half his time at UNC, and he remained able to play largely because he took bogus classes designed to keep athletes academically eligible.

McCants told "Outside the Lines" that he could have been academically ineligible to play during the championship season had he not been provided the assistance. Further, he said head basketball coach Roy Williams knew about the "paper-class" system at UNC. The so-called paper classes didn't require students to go to class; rather, students were required to submit only one term paper to receive a grade.

There is plenty of shock here in North Carolina, because almost any UNC grad will tell you UNC doesn't do this kind of stuff. They are a bunch of delusional people in powder blue v-neck sweaters. The university has investigated this stuff about 8 times and couldn't find anything. They attacked the messenger -- the learning specialist who said this stuff was going on -- for possible allowing individual students to be identified. The horror. Now they have McCants and his all important transcript which blows all of UNC's bullshit out of the water. I think Mary Willingham, the learning specialist, will be taking down a nice settlement in the future from UNC.

A lot of the players were taking courses where you didn't have to attend and just had to turn in a paper at the end of the semester. McCants said the tutor would call the players to let them know the tutor's had finished writing the papers. Then the player would all pile in one or two cars to go pick them up and then go and turn them in. Carpool cheating and 8 guys turning their papers in at the same time was not suspicious to anyone.

Roy Williams said he didn't believe the info Mary Willingham had was true and that he would be happy to meet with her to look it over. She agreed to meet with Williams then old Roy said he was too bust to meet with her.

UNC sports other big story is that an incoming freshman tight end was just arrested for felony criminal larceny. He went into a jewelry store and stole $53,000 in jewelery and watches.

Let's not forget UNC hiring Tyler Hansbrough's mom at the request of her lover and then getting busted for taking trips together on UNC's dime.

Or PJ Hairston - weed, gun, no license in a rented car that wasn't his. Twice?

My favorite one is the story everyone forgets:
Drug bust at home owned by UNC coach Roy Williams

"A UNC spokesperson says Will Graves was finishing his degree at UNC and working as a part-time video coordinator for the basketball team this semester.

UNC says Coach Williams rented the house to Graves, and Graves paid for it.

Graves has been in trouble before, He was kicked off the team in 2010 for violating team rules."
    http://abc11.com/archive/9359530/

The pot is no big deal. My question is how much does working as a part-time video coordinator pay? Enough to rent a $500,000 house?

You have confused a learning institution for a professional sports team. No bother, you wouldn't be the first.

And you're pretty naive about the importance of college sports programs, read money, to these institutes of learning

No, i'm not the confused one. That money just goes to over inflated salaries that in turn make tuition go up, not down. Sports programs in schools are not in the best interest of anyone except those running them.

Jesus H, you and SrslySirius have some real reading comprehension problems. Naive and confused are two different words with different meanings. I didn't say you were confused but If you think college sports programs haven't become a major factor in North American life, especially in the U.S. then you are naive. It's been going on for years and despite what your idealistic thoughts are on the matter it fuels other parts of society, i.e. entertainment/advertising etc., etc., etc. as well.\

Like everything there is some very good things that come from it but there is also the dark side. It's here and has been for a long time and I don't see it changing anytime soon.
I didn't say anything about the effect it has on college tuition one way or the other.

    Bingo

One does not simply bingo their own post. It implies living in your own head.

This shit has been going on everywhere and forever. When I was an undergrad at Cal in the 80s my friend invited me to a "student athlete" study group for a history midterm. He just told me to say when we got there that I was on the swim team and that I forgot my ID card. The session was lead by the TAs for the class. Lots of football players in attendance. Hypothetical questions were posed and sample answers discussed in detail. I'll be damned if they weren't the exact questions on the midterm!
