"Danny Shader, a serial entrepreneur, aims to offer one answer at PayNearMe, a three-year-old startup that claims to offer the first mobile cash payment system. Shader, who noticed statistics showing that having a moderate income doesn’t deter many young Americans from owning smartphones, came up with a system that enables someone to make a mobile purchase on such a device–without a credit card.

The consumer completes the mobile transaction on the phone, chooses a “PayNearMe” option and then must go to a 7-Eleven store and provide cash to the cashier. At the 7-Eleven, the consumer must also provide a code that can be called up on the phone and scanned (or printed out ahead of time at home) — or texted to the phone and provided to the cashier — so the 7-Eleven can convey the payment digitally to the seller of the product or service."
