*** Things to do in Vegas Besides Gamble/Drink etc...

Heading to Vegas last week of June for WSOP for a week. Only this year I will be going with my girlfriend and her 15 year old son. I'll be spending less time in the poker rooms playing cash games and will have a rental car as usual so I can get around cheaper and do a lot of other things off the strip.

Right now the shortlist of things to do is possibly the new ferris wheel , trip to Pawnstars, maybe Mt Charleston and some shows.

I will be staying at Planet Hollywood. I have been there once and the casino seemed ok but anyone ever stay here? I chose this because the prices were reasonable/ good strip location (strip view from room) and it seemed like an average hotel that would have clean rooms.

Nikeytown, I have heard there is a Nike Store somewhere on the strip but have never found it. I know there is an outlet near the airport but that's not what I am looking for.

Helicopter tours and shows like Beatles Love and Michael Jackson Cirque etc.. Anyone know where to get the best rates for these types of shows?

Lake mead, what kind of stuff can you do there?

Last year I caught a sweet shark/reptile/ fish Aquarium they had setup @ Mandalay Bay as well as a Dolphin show and a small zoo full of caged tigers and lions where u could get within a foot of @ the Mirage. I will probably try and find some more stuff like this.

Anyone have any suggestions for other stuff for a teenager to do in Vegas besides the pool?

Red Rock Canyon... not much to do except admire the sites and enjoy the drive along the loop road. I go every time I visit.

Women and underage kids are extremely -EV when it comes to Vegas.

I'm sure you will come up with more ideas on the fly when you get there.

You can always save a few bucks not getting the car by just having Drexel pickup groceries and supplies for you when you are there.

Pinball Hall of Fame on Tropicana (few miles east of strip) is a good way to kill a few hours. Bring a pocket full of quarters, there are a ton of vintage arcade and pinball games, all playable. Also have current stuff too, but the old school stuff from when we were kids is more fun to me.

Shelby Factory Tour is pretty cool if you're into cars at all, it's free, runs twice a day 10:30am and 1:30pm iirc, and you don't need a reservation, just show up. They have a small museum of Shelby cars, and they take you out into the shop for a little bit as well. That's out by the racetrack on the north end of town (Speedway Blvd), a bit of a drive, but worth it.

If you don't eat at the In-n-Out on Tropicana at least once, you're doing it very, very wrong.

as 4Dragons already mentioned, go to a shooting range that rents guns (there are several around town, some offering machine guns)

also, zipline rides: there is a short one on Fremont Street and a major excursion a few miles southeast of Henderson

I had this exact situation in August, 2009.

Benjamin's mom was coming to see me, and it was our "first date weekend". We hadn't seen each other since 1993.

She does not gamble, so I had to come up with good non-gambling activities to do in Vegas, and in the hot summer!

Many have already been suggested, but I'll mention them anyway.

I do want to start off by saying you should NOT go to the In-N-Out on Tropicana. The place is a fucking zoo full of obnoxious tourists, and you will wait over half an hour for your burger at most times.

Go to the other In-N-Out on Sahara. It's a little bit west of Las Vegas Blvd. That one is not crowded at all, and is a much better experience. It's also not that far. While the Tropicana one is a little closer, it's not worth the hassle.

    Anyway, some things to do:

Red Rock Canyon - Interesting to see, but it might be very hot there in June. June is a funny month in Vegas. It can be brutally hot (110 degrees), but it can also be mild (80s). It's usually around 100. If you do go, bring a lot of water. I went here with Ben's mom on the first day she came, but it was extremely hot, and that detracted somewhat from the experience. Not wanting to look like a complainer, I kept my mouth shut about it and smiled the whole way.

Stratosphere - It has various rides on top, and some people enjoy the 100-floor-high observation deck, even without the rides. It does cost money to go up there (like $10/person). Not sure if the "Big Shot" is still there, which is the ride that moves rapidly up and down. I thought it was fun, and wasn't nearly as scary as it looked from the outside. Definitely do this at night, or it's not as interesting.

Mt. Charleston - Won't have any snow, but it has some nice, peaceful-looking mountain scenery, which is weird to see in the Vegas area. It will also be about 30 degrees cooler than Vegas! Definitely drive on all the surrounding roads, as there are some nice views.

Mob Museum - I haven't been there, but I've heard good things about it.

Lake Mead - Not that exciting by itself, but you can rent some fairly fast boats there, which is fun. You can actually bring the boat to the foot of Hoover Dam. You can't go all the way up to the dam (Homeland Security controls that area), but you can get close enough to get a great view of it. There is a 4-hour minimum to rent boats, and this will add up. However, if you want to avoid that, show up around 2 1/2 hours before closing (find out when that is), and they will rent it to you for a shorter time and pro-rate. You will have to pay for gas, too, so prepare to spend around $150-$200 for a 4-hour rental. You will also be boating in 2 states -- Arizona and Nevada, as the lake covers both states!

Hoover Dam - Also on the NV/AZ border, you should see this. Free to see from the top, but parking is like $10. I heard the tour is interesting, but I haven't done it yet. I would avoid the tour on super-hot days, though.

Pinball Museum - In kind of a ghetto area, but very interesting, and really cool if you like old video games and pinball machines. Not touristy or gimmicky at all. It's a very amateur-type operation, and I believe runs as a non-profit.

Zion National Park - Easily forgotten, but it's only 90 miles from Vegas, and it's a bit cooler because it's at a high altitude. It's in southern Utah. Been there twice with Ben's mom (once when she was 7 1/2 months pregnant) and liked it a lot.

Ryback_feed_me_more: [plain]There is free parking for Hoover you just have to look for it.. Its not by the vistor's center but further down after you cross the state line from AZ into NV (the only access is from AZ apparently now since the bypass and huge bridge on 93)[/

My favorite breakfast place is Egg and I, on Sahara, between Arville and Decatur (west of the strip).

It's in a strip mall on the south side of Sahara.

    It's also very cheap.
