8.0 means that a ton of energy was released, but initial reports don't look too bad. The details of how the fault moves are important. If the sea floor moves side to side, the water just sloshes around a bit. In Japan, the sea floor moved up and down, which created that horrible tsunami.

Turns out it was an 8.2, which is actually a good deal bigger than an 8.0, since it's a logarithmic scale.

In addition to what Barry said, these earthquakes are also nowhere near as devastating if they don't occur near heavily populated areas.
