    First interstate internet poker compact

    http://ux.delawareonline.com/story/n...-deal/5801961/

Nevada and Delaware prepare to sign first interstate gambling compact today. It may not seem like a big deal on the surface but it should be the start of getting the ball rolling for other states to do the same with their gambling bills

I did find some irony watching the story on fox5 Vegas this morning in them showing people playing online at Full tilt.

Great news for Delaware to have their three table pool increased and maybe others in the state will join in.

It could be a step in the right direction but gaming regulations will have to review everything and that could take a while.

As for having New Jersey join that might become a dick swinging war for power since you can bet each state will want to lead this charge over the other and since Nevada was first in the game they will want it while New Jersey will just tell them to fuck off because they have over three times as many people.

So Delaware wants to be a Jersey skin? Seems about right.

I have no idea why they think this is legal under federal law. The federal government explicitly has jurisdiction over interstate commerce, and the courts have interpreted that power very broadly for a hundred years.

I guess they think that since the cash transactions are only happening between the players in one state and their local casino that it's still intra-state. But cash value poker chips are clearly moving across state lines.

Let's imagine that everyone in Delaware is a fish, and they all dump their accounts to us superior Nevadans. The Nevadans are going to walk into their local casinos and want their winnings. The casino certainly has cash on hand to cover it, but the house is now taking a loss because of Delawarians chasing gutshot straights. Meanwhile in Delaware, the casinos are sitting on a bunch of buy in money that nobody can cash out. The moment that Delaware transfers that money to Nevada to square their accounts, the whole deal falls under federal control.

Or are they assuming that all of the player pools are similar enough that there will be no net losses? That would be crazy.

Didn't the DOJ just revisit this issue a couple years ago and rule that the wire act pertained only to sports wagering? I understand that isn't the same as a supreme court ruling, but at least in the near future it won't be challenged, and once things are in place, it would seem an unlikely target imo.

I was thinking the UIGEA. But after reviewing it briefly, it really focuses quite narrowly on buy-in transactions. As long as those buy in transactions are happening within one state, it could be legit. Obviously a couple lawyers billed a few hours reviewing this said they should move forward with it.

A very natural move. Both struggle liquidity-wise. I wonder are there any other states that could survive on their own except NJ, NY and California...

Any big population state would do well. New York, Florida, Texas, and California would have good traffic.

Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Ohio might be okay, but they all have around 12 million, and general per capita interest in gambling in all three of those places is lower than places like California and New York.

The states in the 8-10 million population range (Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, Virginia) are marginal. They will make money but not huge money on their own. Look at New Jersey's existing revenue. It's decent, but not great. And this is in a state where there is already a lot of natural interest in gambling because of Atlantic City.

The rest of the states -- the other 38 plus DC -- are too small to produce anything but failsites. Nevada's population is 2.8 million. Delaware's population is only 925,000. NV and DE combining will still produce a pool of fewer than 4 million residents, which won't be enough.

The landmark interstate cooperation is the big story here, not the impact on Nevada itself. Of course, Delaware residents will see a huge increase in traffic now that they can play with Nevada, but not vice-versa.

Poll: U.S. Warms To Legalized Marijuana, Firmly Against Online Gambling
    AP May 8, 2014 6:40 AM

"ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A new poll finds that Americans are split over whether marijuana should be legalized for recreational use. But the poll finds them solidly opposed to online gambling.

A Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll released Thursday finds 50 percent of Americans favor legalizing marijuana use, while 27 percent support legalizing Internet gambling in the 47 states that don’t allow it."

Could use it's own topic but whatever I will just put it here. New York is trying to get online poker now as well. If they it it passed along with California I can see like half or more of the states making it legalized in the next few years.
