Just in: tourney is cancelled and prize fund has been frozen by gaming commission pending investigation.
The people remaining only get their buyin back or what?

"It was not immediately clear what would happen with the entrance fees paid by people who participated in the tainted match. The Borgata said the state ordered "that all unpaid prize money be held in trust until more details and resolution can be determined."

The Associated Press reported early Saturday that the state of New Jersey has decided to cancel the first event of the Borgata Winter Poker Open with 27 people remaining due to an investigation into the counterfeit chips being used.
The state has said that at least one person used a “substantial amount” of phony tournament chips at some point in the event. The prize money was frozen pending the investigation.
According to reports, an extra one million in tournament chips could have been in the event.
A total of 4,814 players put up the $560 to enter. It’s unclear if any will receive refunds.
The tournament was suspended on Friday when suspicion of fake chips first arose.
“Thus far, investigators have found that one or more tournament entrants improperly introduced a significant number of counterfeit chips into the tournament, gaining an unfair advantage and compromising the integrity of play for the event,” Tom Ballance, the Borgata’s president and chief operating officer reportedly said Saturday morning.
“It is extremely unfortunate that the criminal actions of these individuals can have a detrimental impact on more than 4,000 other entrants,” he added. “We fully understand and regret the disappointment this cancellation causes our valued customers, and we will work diligently with DGE investigators to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. The integrity of our games and the confidence of our players is of the utmost importance to us.”
Other events in the series are moving along as scheduled.

The one day delay was just the casino buying time and reviewing security footage to see if an immediate resolution could be made. It is extremely difficult to find anything unless you actually see the culprit(s) put the fake chips on the table considering how many times a chip moves from one stack to another throughout a tournament. Who knows how far into the tournament the fake chips were put into play?
As for what to do at this point they will probably look at the 27 players left in depth running them through casino databases doing their due diligence before disbursing the remaining funds accordingly.
Since they can't continue the tournament or pause it forever as people travel from here to there the the casino really don't have any other option but to run an investigation and for everyone left whose cleared of wrong doing they should probably get the chip chop refund. It's sad for those who entered that will have money tied up for a while and clearly if some guy had a mega stack that he earned fairly aka wasn't the cheat then he's probably pissed as well but what can you do? The whole situation sucks for the casino and the players but hopefully won't take forever to get resolved.
If someone was eliminated by the cheat and they can prove it then figuring these situations out in regards to giving them some sort of refund is a massive challenge so good luck with that one.
Not exactly as difficult as some may think. Just very time consuming most likely.
They are going to attempt to reverse engineer the trail from the first counterfeit chips that were found. Men went out 28th, the most likely scenario was that the 5k chips were added in some increments, say 50k, on seat changes.
The most likely scenario was a couple of players left had a bunch of these, and began introducing them in an orderly fashion as the tourney drew down. The tables break much quicker the shorter the tourny gets obv, meaning it would likely be easier for people to pull from pocket to rack in between seat changes. Sometime between Day 2 and 3 when 5ks were in abundance is probably where the DGE will focus. Starting with the reverse engineering of the ones found.
Interesting fact, my friend said everyone started with 5k chips on day 1, initial stack included some 5ks. Although obv the amount being introduced would of been much later, or it would of been too obv, like sometime on day 2. The dealers really botched this assuming no one noticed until late in day 3, or they weren't introduced until day 3. This is probably what the DGE/Borgata etc are doing, connecting all these dots.
Someone is going down hard, charges, life bans it is just a matter of who. Also interesting the kid winning has no major 6 figure cashes or anything, even if they equity chop, hell still get a good deal. Many people as my buddy told me can go from 1st to busting in 20th with 27 left, so even oan equity chop for the top 3 isnt actually horrible.
*duh they never played day 3, must of been late on day 2 they were introduced.

if i read this right there was at least two racks of 5k chips intruduced in to the tourney? i would think a orginised group would have done this, a bunch of stupid fuckers as well as the chips arnt exactly the same shade of grey and would have had to known that this many chip s would be detected at some point in the tourney. which made me think that it may have been done with some inside help ie chip sample before the tournament series started.
\i would also think they will catch some of the culprits and find that they are tourney grinders and semi pro players.
it is a shame really as it ruins the enjoyment of the game to find that some one cheeted and you basically wasted your buyin.

Men "The Master" was at this event. The most ironic thing is that he busted 28th, and so he was the last person to be paid before the tournament was suspended/cancelled and the remaining prize pool frozen pending the NJ Gaming Commission's investigation.
No joke.
People love to point to the obvious easy mark which is Men the Master but it seems a bit too obvious and done in such an amateurish way that it's probably someone else.
Once Men got outed a few years back for sneaking chips on his stack usually from horses in the tournament giving him them along with other chip dumping that went on he stopped playing the kind of tournament schedule he once did which for Men was a whole lot of live MTTs.
It wouldn't surprise me if Men let things calm down before going back to ways of cheating BUT like I said this seems very amateurish and careless which leads me to believe it's probably not Men who got away with what he did for years which shows he did what he did intelligently.
