Jim Schwartz (Gym Shorts) Fired @ Lions - Who Want's This Job?

    local: http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/24...h-jim-schwartz

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - FOX 2 News has learned that Jim Schwartz will not return as coach of the Detroit Lions in 2014.
The Lions (7-9) fired their head coach Monday, one day after they ended their late-season slide with a loss at Minnesota.

Schwartz, who was 29-52 in five seasons, had two years left on his contract. But his talented team fell far short of expectations.

The Lions were in position to win the NFC North after a 40-10 pounding of Green Bay on Thanksgiving. But they didn't win again the rest of the season, a free fall that included the home loss to the New York Giants last week that eliminated them from the playoffs.

They lost six of their last seven games despite holding the lead in the fourth quarter in each of them and missed the playoffs for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons.

The Lions lost their last eight games last year after a .500 start. They collapsed again this season with four straight losses and six in a seven-game stretch -- blowing fourth-quarter leads in each setback -- after they took control of the NFC North race.
The Lions took on the personality of their demonstrative and emotionally charged coach and that wasn't always good news for them.
When Detroit ran the ball instead of having turnover-prone Matthew Stafford throw late in regulation of its 23-20 overtime loss to the New York Giants in Week 16, the crowd reacted with a loud chorus of boos. Schwartz responded by looking away from the field and screaming something toward the stands.
That wasn't the first time his temper flared publicly.
Schwartz negated a video review and was called for unsportsmanlike conduct by angrily throwing a challenge flag last season when Houston's Justin Forsett scored after two Lions tackled him, leading to a defeat during an eight-game, season-ending slide. The previous year, Schwartz had a heated exchange with San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh and had to be separated following their postgame handshake.
"Coach is fiery. We love that about him," Detroit offensive lineman Rob Sims has said. "I think he's a great leader in regards to that, just staying positive, being emotional. Some guys, they try to just hide."
Detroit, which also lost a lead in the final quarter in Week 2 at Arizona, and the 2000 San Diego Chargers are the only NFL teams since 1940 to lose fourth-quarter leads in seven games in a season, according to STATS.
Schwartz was 12-32 in games in November or later for a .273 winning percentage that was the worst for a coach in five-plus straight seasons with a team since Denver's Lou Saban won one-quarter of those late-season games from 1967-1971, according to STATS. His .363 winning percentage overall with the Lions is the worst by an NFL coach in his first five full seasons since John McKay won fewer than 30 percent of his games with the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1976-1980.
The Lions gave Schwartz an extension entering the 2012 season, when he had one year left on his four-deal worth about $11 million.
The second contract made him the longest-tenured coach the franchise has had since Wayne Fontes led the Lions from 1988-96.
Bobby Ross, Gary Moeller, Marty Mornhinweg, Steve Mariucci, Dick Jauron -- on an interim basis -- and Rod Marinelli all had a chance to lead a franchise with only one playoff victory since winning the 1957 NFL title before Schwartz got a shot to be a head coach for the first time at any level.
Schwartz, who is from Baltimore, played linebacker at Georgetown and graduated with a degree in economics. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Maryland in 1989, later had the same position with the Minnesota Golden Gophers and went on to become a secondary coach for North Carolina Central and linebackers coach at Colgate. Schwarz was a college and pro scout for the Cleveland Browns and spent three years on the Baltimore Ravens' staff before moving on and up with the Titans.

So who should take the job? I really like Gruden here.

I'd be surprised if Gruden left his cushion job with ESPN to take on a task such as the Detroit Football Lions.

Like the boys said on the ticket, they need to go with someone that can really work with Stafford because he's starting to regress.

Ken Wisenhunt, the current offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers. He has contributed in the improvement of Philip Rivers's game. The Lions need someone who has taken a team to the Super Bowl, along with someone who can help Stafford. I do not want the team to bring in another "upcoming" defensive coordinator to head coach type person (Ex. Marinelli, Schwartz).

I liked Coach Whiz during his time in AZ. I think a lot of the personnel problems were brought on by former GM Rod Graves.

I think he would be a solid choice

In Matt Stafford's 5 seasons, he is 2-27 against teams that have finished the season over 500. He beat the Seahawks last year in Detroit, and the Packers this year. But that Aaron Rodgers-less version of the Packers had a losing record. I just don't if those guys have what it takes to beat good teams in the playoffs.

If I was Lovie Smith, I would go to the Texans. They have a ton of talent, they have the first draft pick, and even if you go 8-8 it's seen as a huge improvement over 2-14.

I have also heard twitter rumblings weeks ago that Whiz wants the Redskins job. Skins are also void of a legitimate #1 and Whisenhunt is still good friends with Larry Fitzgerald.

It is clear that we can't afford Larry after this year and I doubt he would resign a much smaller deal for an ownership that still cannot find a QB.

Add Tampa to the coach vacancy list:

There's some talent there so I think this would be a desirable destination too. I literally laughed out loud when Adam Schefter claimed on the NFL pre-game that he thought he was safe & would return.

Not sure if youre aware but they played GB twice this year. Oddly enough they do it every year.

The Lions are where coaches go to die, but at least they are entertaining, unlike Cleveland and Buffalo.

Yeah. And when the Lions played the version of the Packers with Aaron Rodgers at QB, they lost. That was kind of the point.

Lions still would have lost that game but it might have been closer since they didn't have Calvin Johnson the first time around against the Packers.

As for this job the Lions need an experienced coach whether it be an assistant with a lot of that elsewhere for a winning team or one who is a proven winner in the current era of the game and by that I mean no Mike Shanahan types.

I can't remember a division being handed to a team on a silver platter for the taking with all the key injuries the Packers and Bears had yet a team not be able to take advantage. This should have been a walk in the park for the Lions to win the NFC North and by not doing so is a disgrace.
