A. might be some shitty version of Skittles, which happens to be candy-coated scrap from Starburst cutting machines. EDIT: not any more. They changed the formulation a few years ago for Skittles.
Those American Smarties were not allowed to be sold in Canada as the trademark for the name was owned by Nestle. Nestle's smarties are candy covered chocolate similar to M&M's but not identical. The American smartie company marketed their glucose pills as Rockets in Canada. Rockets are not popular except as a halloween treat, smarties however have a high market share in the pre-diabetic chesterfield potato market.
